Excerise with or without sneakers

I exercise in my bare feet because I find sneakers a bit too bulky to wear in the house. I was told that I should be wearing shoes. I was just wondering what the general consensus is on this topic.

I'd say it would depend on the exercise..."exercise" is a pretty broad term.

I like barefoot, but it doesn't work for me for everything. For me:

    Yoga - Barefoot
Lifting (home) - socks (on carpet so not slippery) or barefoot
    Lifting (gym) - shoes
Rowing machine (home, team room, race) - socks
    Rowing machine (gym) - shoes
    Spin class - shoes
    Bike - shoes
    Aerobics type stuff - shoes
Kung fu, tai chi - slippers with fabric soles
Rowing shell - socks (boat has integral shoes)
Canoe or kakak - non-bulky flexible shoes or boots
    Walking - shoes

Some things need stick, slide, cushioning, protection, . . . .

If you've already been exercising that way without ill effects, keep doing so.

I generally workout barefoot as much as possible when at home.

I never wear shoes or socks when exercising at home. I do yoga, pilates, HIIT, and strength.

Shoes except yoga. Got plantar fasciitis doing plyometrics barefoot.

I do both. I workout from home so I have a lot of pairs that support my feet for various activities. The main pairs I wear are lightweight and flexible.

For Pilates, yoga and bodyweight work (except squats and lunges) I wear socks.

Activities like plyo, HIIT and high impact aerobics proper shoes are a must for me for support.

If I am at home, bare foot for everything (unless I am running more than a couple houses distance down the sidewalk). Unfortunately at the gym, they tend to frown on that...

I'm always barefoot if I can get away with it. Certain exercises trigger a problem in the arch of my feet and it's usually worse if I'm wearing shoes. If I'm barefoot sometimes I can get away with doing them.

Shoes for me. I tend to twist my ankle without them.

That's odd. Usually the height of the shoes midsole increases chances of twisting an ankle.

At home, barefoot for DVD workouts, lifting, yoga, etc. I have a running treadmill on which I wear shoes for running, and I also have a treadmill desk for walking while I work from home. Walking on my treadmill desk I do barefoot, but I did have to work up to it slowly, since sometimes it's for hours at a time. I feel that my arches have gotten stronger by so much barefoot walking.

These days I wear shoes for running or walking outdoors, but I've been known in the past to run barefoot or in minimalist shoes.

If I went to a gym, I'd wear shoes for the obvious gross factor

Most of the time barefoot, with the exception I put shoes on for tabata rounds when doing 8 counts or burpess. I'm always afraid I will break a toe when going hard with those exercises, which I do on hard wood floors. I imagine if I hard carpet it would be a different story.

I'm shoes all the time when working out. I just feel like I need the support they provide.

I feel like I lift better barefoot, but I'm so afraid I'm going to drop something on my damn toe :# Socks are too slippery in my garage, I have those mats underneath.

I used to say that too but truthfully, shoes aren't much help if you drop weights on them.

I usually don't wear shoes to exercise at home. Mostly wood floor, rug or yoga mat sometimes.

I try to workout barefoot as much as possible. The only place I go that forces me to wear shoes is ballet class where you have to wear ballet shoes. The foot is like your hand in terms of functionality so wearing shoes would be like wearing mittens to workout. My workouts involve lifting, calisthenics, yoga and aerial related activities so the lack of footwear is related to this. If I was into running or cycling I would say my answer would be very different.
