Ever get so motivated that you tried to do too much at once? What gives first?

I am forever trying to:
Lose weight
Eat right
Quit smoking
Quit Alcohol
Go for promotion
Save money
Perfect the house

All at the same time. And you can tell by this post, I'm not successful ! And once one thing goes, it all goes to hell in a handbag. Then I get moody and stuffy and do exactly as I please for a while. Then I get all inspired and motivated again - thus the cycle continues. I'm rubbish really. Guess I just want to be a Stepford Wife. Ho Hum. FAIL.

Anyone else do the same? Or has anyone figured out how to break the cycle? I KNOW it should be easier with "one thing at once" until the habit has formed, but I just can't get there. Help !

Weight management and eating well are my "focus areas". (I don't work, don't drink, don't smoke, and I've given up being a good housewife.) I deisre a perfect meal plan, but I know that perfect is an abstraction, it's just random, and a good diet over time is all I need to maintain a good weight and good health. So I aim for imperfection. I actually consciously implement small flaws now and then, and I allow myself to weigh two pounds more when I can't get out of the house because of the icy roads. It's challenging to make mistakes on purpose when you've grown up getting rewards for the right answers.

    I focus on three things:
    - work
    - university
    - cycling

Fortunately, once I joined MFP and settled into my own personal diet plan, it became part of the background like brushing my teeth, showering, rushing out to catch the bus in the morning, doing the dishes, etc. ... I eat certain things at certain times and I know if I do that, it will be OK. Just like how I know that if I wake up at a certain time, I'll make it to work on time. :)

When it comes to housework and all those errands and bits and pieces, I've got a list, and I try to do one thing each day.

yep that's the list all right
    baby steps...

    small changes have big impact
some days it all goes to the dogs

I think you have to pick one or two things, and commit to one or two very small changes. Do them daily. Evaluate your success. When you feel comfortable, pick and commit to a few other changes or habits, and work on those. If you can't form new lasting habits to meet these many goals, you're pretty likely to crash and burn.

Motivation will build as you see your small actions and changes become habit.

I had an alcohol therapist tell me once that if you take too much on,you'll fail at all! Stick to your most important priorities :)

Seems like they are interrelated, maybe take that into consideration. Less alcohol means less calories for weight loss and less money spent. Working on the house is cardio--wear your hot running gear when you vacuum. As you lose weight you will become even more attractive (and you have your act together) and everyone knows that doesn't hurt when promotions are under consideration. Message is that focus on one goal doesn't mean you aren't contributing to other goals.

I'm ADHD so I know the feeling exactly. Writing down goals for the month (short-term goals) and accomplishing them one by one will help you succeed as well as giving you the great feeling of accomplishment.

Yep that's the story of my Life.
But I've come to the realization that perfection is just a perception .
