body fat percentage images

Hi

Does anyone have a reliable diagram or images showing what various body fat percentages look like, on a woman?

I'm not going to buy special scales or go to a gym to get this info so hoping to be able to get a reasonably accurate idea, from pictures. Doesn't need to be exact to the percentage. I'm thinking I'm between 25 - 35%, which is a big margin.

Here is one that has pictures for both men and women. Scroll down about half of the page and you will find them there:

Oh yeah thanks. I have Googled it and found a variety of pictures but they all differ. In some charts I look like 25% and in others I look like 35%. Don't know which is accurate...some pictures show a large chubby hanging belly with rolls at 35% and others don't. I don't have rolls, but there is chubbiness

If anyone knows for a fact what their body fat percentage is, and would be kind enough to share a picture, that would be much appreciated.

Or even, if someone knows their body fat percentage and can verify that their body resembles the proportions shown in one of the charts, indicating that the chart is accurate..

I think it’s difficult because body fat looks different on each individual.

And It's always centered on the midsection... what about thighs, back, and arms?

True. I was measured at about 30% bf and I have a very pronounced belly, thinner arms, legs, neck/shoulders so my midsection looks a lot bigger than the pictured 30%.

There are also calculators that can give you an estimate based on your stats that would give you a ballpark idea.

Thanks Musicfan. I didn't realise calculations can be made just using a tape measure. I can do that.

I think I'm about 20-21%... I think my profile pic is a good reflection of it.

The pics don't mean much because they never document how the bf% was determined!

Thanks Becca. That's helpful. I definitely don't look as fit as you. Your pic is small on my phone but it looks like abs are defined.

So I used one online calculator that said I'm 19% (I like that one, but I don't beleive it's accurate) and another calculator, the navy one, said I'm 33%, which is depressing. The link is to the calculator which showed me as 19%. I wonder if anyone's knows if it's off....

I'm under 15% bodyfat (went to fitness center to get measured). I do not have visible muscle like the pictures above show due to extra skin from my weightloss. I would have NEVER thought my bodyfat percentage was so low, and it really hit home how much loose skin I have.

I recommend going to an actual fitness place to get checked out.

If the gym has now confirmed your body fat percentage PixelPuff, would you be interested in putting your measurements for waist, wrist, height and weight into the calculator above, and seeing if it concurs with what you know is accurate? :-)

(But I don't see much difference between the 3 pics in the 27 - 40% range.)

Agree. Dont see a difference in those either.

Becca would you consider putting you wrist, waist and hip measurements etc into this calculator, and tell me if it's accurate - if it accurately reflects your 20-21%?

The 36-40 % pic looks slimmer than the one before to me

    23.3%

To make this easier, I'm 5'2", 103lbs. I wear a size 00-0 women's depending on brand, or a size 10 lil girl's if the women's is too big. Measurements: 27in, 22.5in, 28.5in. This is me, picture recently taken.

This calculator put me at 25.6% so I would say it's not accurate.

That calculator you linked is not accurate for me at all, it puts me at 27% .. I don't know my bodyfat% but I know I am not that high.

There are several formulas that can give you fairly good approximations of your fat level based on your BMI, gender, and age.

Of course, if you have reason to believe you're an outlier then the calculations will be even less accurate,

Here are two that formulas that I have handy because they bracket my personal DXA scanned body fat % when I plug in my own numbers

    1.2*BMI + 0.23*AGE in years - 5.4 = Female body fat % approximation - 10.8 = Male body fat % approximation
    1.39*BMI + 0.16*AGE in years -9 = Female body fat % approximation - 10.34 = Male body fat % approximation

I just measured myself. I guess im 33% body fat :(.
    I have a BMI of 25.9.

    I weigh 158
    5.55 inches tall
Waist 32 (with costantly bloated stomach )
    Hips 40 at widest part
    Thigh 23 at widest part
    Neck 14
    Wrist 6
    Forearm 9.5

The thing is, im very high waisted.
Lowcut pants looks the best on me.
My stomach is what messes my measurments up. My stomach always have had a natural pouch. Gassy looking. That has always been like that, even when i was at a healthy weight .

I was hoping i had a lower perecntage.
Oh well. I have lost 26 pounds so im just gonna keep on trucking.

How did you measure it? If you used that calculator link, it's really inaccurate.

Ignore the mess in the background but this was taken the week I had mine measured. I was between 25-27%
It was a caliper measurement by a trainer and not as accurate as the scan done when I started but since I started at 30-32% and about 30lb heavier having never lifted I trust the number. I do lift now

I like this one because there is descriptions to go along with the pictures. Based on the descriptions I think I fall into the 20-22% range.

    Body Fat Percentage Women 10-12%
This is an extremely low body fat level typically attained by female bodybuilders. Essential fat for women is round 8-10% compared to 2% for men. Why the difference? Women have more fat in breast tissue and the area surrounding the uterus. This level of body fat is not considered safe, or healthy for women who will be unable to menstruate. Striations of muscle, separation between muscles, clear vascularity are all noticeable at this level. The women in the photo is likely at the higher end of the range at 12% body fat because she is not too vascular.

    Body Fat Percentage Women 15-17%
This is still considered a very low body fat for women, which is similar to the 6-7% body fat for range men. Many bikini and fitness models will reach this body fat level and some may not be able to menstruate. Muscle definition in the abs, legs, arms, and shoulders is apparent, there is some vascularity and some separation between muscles. Hips, buttocks, and thighs generally have a little less shape because of the low body fat.

    Body Fat Percentage Women 20-22%
This is body fat percentage is usually in the “fit” category of most body fat charts and is typical of many female athletes. Some definition in the abs is apparent, there is body fat on the arms and legs, but it’s not too pronounced. There is minimal, but some separation between muscles.

    Body Fat Percentage Women 25%
This is on the low end of what’s average for most women and is characterized by a shape that is neither too slim, nor overweight. Curves in the hips are usually more apparent along with more fat in the buttocks and thighs. A 5’4” women who weighs 130lb and has 97lb of lean body mass has 25% body fat.

    Body Fat Percentage Women 30%
While most men have fat funnel into their stomachs, as the body fat of most women (but certainly not all) increases, this fat tends to accumulate in the hips, buttocks, and thighs. At 30% body fat, the hips, thighs, and buttocks are more pronounced and round. This is considered the high end of average for women in many body fat charts.

    Body Fat Percentage Women 35%
The hips become even wider at this level of body fat and the face and neck will appear rounder and more full. Hip circumference can start approaching 40+ inches and waist circumference of 32+ inches. Some belly fat may start protruding over the waist as well.

    Body Fat Percentage Women 40%
The hips and thighs grow larger so that hip circumference can reach 42+ inches, waist of 35 inches, and thighs over 25 inches.

    Body Fat Percentage Women 45%
The skin may begin to lose its smooth appearance as more and more fat accumulates. Hip Circumference can may reach 45 inches+ and waist circumference 35+ inches. The hips may become noticeably wider than the shoulders.

    Body Fat Percentage Women 50%
The will likely look like it has dimples more fat accumulates. Hip Circumference can may reach 45+ inches and waist circumference 40+ inches and thighs above 30+ inches. The hips will likely be noticeably wider than the shoulders. To put it in better perspective, a 5’4” women who weighs 200lb and has 100lb of lean body mass has 50% body fat.
