Hi everyone, im hifsa from uk & pakistan, im 5’8 & Im currently 115kg, so my bmi is 38, which is obese. I think I have food addiction, Ive always had a very weird and odd relationship with food, I kind of worshipped food, It gave me so much comfort ever since I was a child, I still havent discovered why. I became getting overweight when I was 10, I started slowly eating a lot & all of the bad things, turn past 9 years & Im still stuck now heavier than ever, with the SAME eating habits. Dont get me wrong Ive tried many many diets, expensive nutritionists, meal plans. you name it. I was successful in them, sometimes losing 5 kg’s in 2 weeks, losing 16kg’s in 6 months, but was I consistent? hell no. I always succumbed to my food addiction habits, my parents would be so dissapointed when i’d give up, they said I wasnt ‘strong enough’ to do it, for a long time I believed that too, so I thought hey only giving up is the bad thing, so now Im in the cycle where im on the outside ‘following my plan’ but whenever I’d see food, I would eat it. any food, I had insane cravings whenever i’d be on my diet. But I did realise it had NOTHING to do with strength its a disease and we are victims of it, its more than just will, its a permanent change or you die, simple as that, its do or die. Every year 300,000 people die because of obesity. Ive already been through one health crisis, I had surgery in july last year for my gall bladder stones, Which is caused directly by obesity. Something that was curable. now I only see two ends to my story, death or a weight loss surgery like a stomach balloon or gastric bypass. Gastric bypass is a painful surgery where the manipulate the stomachs valves and make it smaller so you can only eat puréd things or very very little. surgery is one of the scariest things I have experienced. I would never want anyone to go through it. So now im at the point where Im scared, and now out of fear Im making a change. hopefully permanent. If you guys have anything in common in what im saying, please dont hesitate to reply! would love to hear other point of views and stories & help if I can! xx

Food addiction isn't really a thing. You find comfort in food, almost everybody does, but if we tell ourselves (or are told) that the food we like most, are bad, we start to crave them like crazy.
Diets only "work" temporarily, the real "work" they do, is to warp your relationship with food, and make you heavier for every attempt.
Gall stones are only indirectly caused by obesity, the real cause is the low fat diets used to try to fight the obesity - your gall bladder empties itself to digest fat, and when there's no use for the bile, it builds up and form stones.
Losing weight is really simple. Use MFP as it's designed, and you lose weight. If you keep at it, you'll keep it off, too. It takes patience, commitment, education, honesty. Some discipline, but no suffering (always remember, if you suffer, you're doing it wrong. Healthy weightloss is challenging, but feels good.). You can eat the food you like. But you can't eat everything all the time. MFP can teach you how to make priorities, so that you get all you need, and some of what you want.4 -

I had the gastric bypass which was successful for me. There was a young woman in my therapy group who also had this life transforming surgery.

Because of your past I suggest no radical diets with fast weight loss. In fact I suggest you keep quiet about your resolve with your parents this time. They tie too much of their opinion on the relative success of one diet or another. Do you really want your self worth tied to whether the scale goes up or down?
By the way, even after the bypass within six months I was able to eat pretty well all foods. I eat smaller portions of course. I don’t tolerate soft breads or milk very well. So I eat yogurt and rough breads. Simples.1 -
I had another idea. Can you come up with a few activities that can provide comfort without calories? I will list three of mine.
- Tea (sugar free)
- Walking

@kommodevaran that is quite true because I felt that way too. When I had the surgery I had to eat very light foods, I did that for about two weeks, & after that my cravings started & they were bad. I craved ALL the things I wasnt allowed and ended up eating them too. Yes Ive heard that gallstones can be caused by that too, but it can also be caused by obesity & really bad food patterns. I tried the healthy way out too, I did that last year for about 6 months but I couldnt control my cravings anymore & gave it up. But thankyou for replying & sharing your words!!0
