What did you do with your too-worn-to-donate clothes?

I have a number of things that aren’t in good enough condition to donate, and I hate sending things to the landfill. Anybody sew/craft and have ideas for old clothes ? (Denim, jersey, cotton-blend knits)

    • You can use the clothes or scraps from them to make clothes for barbies or stuffed animals.
    • You can turn your favorite shirt into a throw pillow,
      • or use denim scraps or t-shirts as a patchwork quilt.

I make cleaning rags with some things.
My dd is going to make a t-shirt quilt. We have made bags out of old shirts.
You can find lots of ideas on pinterest. Maybe do a rag rug or basket from strips of cloth.

When clothes are too worn, or damaged/torn, for donation. I make rags out of them for cleaning my bicycles, or other things I don't want to use dish cloths on.

You can donate them to automotive repair shops. Mechanics love getting rags to use, then they don't have to buy them.

Every year I take a Motorcycle trip with my buddies. 1 to 2 weeks. I always take my oldest t shirts, underpanties and socks. Each morning, I toss my underpanties and socks. I use my t shirt to wipe the road from my bike and then toss it. By the end of my trip, I have tossed one of each every day. When I get home, the new socks, underpanties and tees, that I ordered before I left are waiting for me.

      brilliant.

I just found out you can donate bags of really worn textiles (clothes OR home items like towels/sheets) to H&M stores and they will give you a coupon for 15% off your entire purchase (you don't have to use it same day either). The clerk explained this to me last night and gave me a brochure about it, they recycle the fabric in mass quantities...he said people bring in items that are ripped, stained, etc, and they don't mind.

Just another option, especially if you want to purchase clothing at H&M (I know it's not the best quality but they do have cute items sometimes especially for if you are in between sizes and losing)!

For jeans I cut them into shorts main reason I have shorts in the first place. Others I use as rags.....
Also in my line of work we buy bags of rags to clean up the job site. I'm sure you can find a company that buys/takes your old clothes and does that.

If you wear makeup you can use the scraps and bottle liquid makeup remover to remove your makeup instead of buying towelettes! Or dusting cloths or head bands or oil rags for car repair or stuff them into an old pillow case and make a knee mat for when gardening or repairing cars or make reusable grocery bags or doll clothes for kids toys!

I put them all in a hefty bag and dump it behind the Chinese restaurant late at night.

That explains the bowl of Pho I had last week...
