Nervous about starting a job...

I got laid off working at a data center as an IT helpdesk specialist last September. I officially got a new job today and start monday doing the same thing 40 hours a week. Having all the time in the day to exercise and eat right and cook right is super easy unemployed. Anyone have any good sandwich lunch ideas? Also, do you work out before work or after? I'm not a morning person, so if anyone has any advice for getting into a morning routine I'd appreciate it. It'll be good that I'm more active throughout the day and my work has a gym a couple blocks away so major plus.

    Congratulations on the new job! That's wonderful, especially in the current state of things!

    As far as sandwich ideas, I try to stay away from lunch meat since it has SO MUCH SODIUM. If I were you, I'd grill up a few boneless, skinless chicken tenders or breasts with some seasoning, slice them up in serving sizes and freeze them. Take em out the night before, throw them in your lunch the next morning and build yourself a chicken sandwich on a wrap or something! Otherwise, fruits, vegetables, etc!

    I suggest getting a bento box lunch system (google it). Get it all together the night before and go ahead and log it. Have your breakfast determined and ready to go as well. have it all logged. The only variable you have to worry about just then is dinner. Do this every evening before bed. You won't have to rush in the AM and will have a settled start to the day since everything is organized.

    To get up and do it in the morning....it takes willpower and just doing it! Trust me I know! I hate mornings...and I have to MAKE myself get up and go early...

    I love the Sara Lee Mini Bagels (whole wheat or whole grain soft & smooth) 100 cals...and the little Buddig meats (90 cal pkg) to throw on it....veggies on the side...with maybe a little ranch dip....

    congratulations on the new job :) i work out in the mornings--it helps because it's DONE and then you don't have to worry about it anymore ;-) it helps me to meet a friend (we also are each other's wake up call!) so it's helpful...good luck! as for lunches--i'm not your girl, i work from home, so i can make 'real' food for lunch :0P

    Well first off congrats on getting a new job!! I work M-F 8-5 and I just can't for the life of my get up before work. I try to go right from work to the gym most days because I find it's easier if I get it done with right away. If I bring a sandwich for lunch it's usually tuna or turkey, I'm not much help on that end!

    I'm scared sh*tless to get a job. I've been unemployed for a few years and when I started MFP in March I've had nothing but time to dedicate to my health and working out and the thought of finding a job (Plus school ...I'm working on my bachelors) scares the crap out of me.

    Congrats on your new job just try to keep focused.
  • Congratulations! New jobs are fun and scary.

    Watch out for cold cuts, many are very high in sodium, but in moderation you can enjoy :)
    My lunches are usually one of these:
    Turkey slices, lettuce, spinach, cucumber, tomato, hummus, olive oil, sprinkle of oregano and kosher salt on whole grain
    Black beans and brown rice
    Crunchy peanut butter and homemade jam on whole grain
    Homemade burrito with black beans, beef/chicken, cheese, lettuce, tomato on whole wheat tortilla
    PBJ with banana slices/apple slices

    Also bring some fruit. Apple season is starting and mixed berries are tasty and very good for you. Steamed veggies with a bit of sauce is good too.

    If you can, winter is a great time to do BIG batches of food and freeze it in portions. We like to make chili, senate bean soup, potato and leek soup, roasted root vegetables, and stews.

    Just try to keep your workout schedule as consistent as possible. I tend to go to the gym right after work and I bring my gym bag with me so I do not go home. Food wise just plan your meals as much as possible.

    I just love on these sandwich wraps (La Tortilla Factory Smart & Delicious Tortillas, I get them at Safeway). 50cals for a small one, 100 for a large. I'll make a few wraps with whatever looks good in the fridge, and not be putting a lot of calories into bread.

  • Congrats on the Job. I usually eat my sandwich (listed below )with a fuji apple.


    Here is my typical lunch sandwich.

    Castle Wood Reserve - Black Forest Ham Thinly Shaved, 4 oz.
    Oroweat - Sandwich Thins Naturals- 100% Whole Wheat , 1 roll
    Deli - Cheese - Colby Jack Slices, 1 slice
    Best Foods - Light Mayonnaise, 1 tbsp,
    French's - Classic Yellow Mustard (100% Natural)

    Per Serving:
    Calories: 345 Carbs: 24 Fat: 16 Protein 30

    Wow thanks everyone! I workout better in the evening and since my husband and I are a one car family, when he comes to pick me up we should just head straight to the gym, since the gym is about 30 minutes from where we live.

    You guys got me inspired!!
