As far as putting what I eat in my diary and following what my calorie intake is per day is tht usually accurate0

Have you tried it? Of course there are a lot of variables. Just start, and then educate yourself.
I lost 70+ pounds in 2007 and I've kept it off by using the food diary and learning about nutrition.0 -

How do we know if you're being accurate?2 -
MFP is a simple tool. It can be as accurate or as inaccurate as you make it. I've found it to be fairly accurate as long as I'm using good entries, double-checking the barcode scanner against my packages, and weigh or measure my food portions properly. But if you use other people's generic or homemade entries, take wild guesses about what's in a food instead of logging each ingredient, or eyeball portion sizes, then it'll probably be less accurate.
It works if you make it work.5 -
I agree with Diannethegeek. For me using the portion size on packages works well when logging data and is precise. If you are guessing much of the time accuracy will go down and make your targets more difficult to hit.0
