Starting down the gym.

Started diet a few weeks ago and I have now just join the local gym. I'm determined to get fit again. A bit nervous / embarrassed about being the fat man in the room surrounded by super fit people. 60 pounds to lose, need friends and support to keep me going down the gym.

Hi there! I just paid for a year long membership at a local rec center. I am determined to no longer be the one huffing and puffing up the foothills I hike, so I feel you.
(While there may be a few that are there to snark on other's progress, or perceived lack thereof, I find that most people are too involved with their own progress, or perceived lack thereof, to even notice me.)
We can do this!2 -
No need to be nervous or embarassed! Everyone there is working on something, there is nothing wrong with that.
~Enjoy your workout3 -
You're not the "fat man at the gym" and the gym is not "filled with super fit people" (trust me here).
Everyone is there for similar goals, no matter stage you're in.6 -

This^^! People are at all different stages. Just get started.

hunny please. LOL i was a short fat (235 lb at 5 ft 3) antisocial girl at the gym who had an allergic reaction to something on the mchines while surrounded by super buff guys on my first attempt at weights. All they saw was the fat girl on the floor struggling to breathe and being taken away by an ambulance after a few light weight lifts. THAT was horrifying. But im so happy i went back, Took me a year to go back but i did. And this time around i see just how little *kitten* people give about me and my workout. No ones watching or judging you harshly i promise. Even if they were your there for you and their sad judgemental *kitten* arent worth your time to bat an eyelash at anyway. Be the best you, Thats all any of us can be. Lifes to short to not do thigns you want to do out of fear or emberassment. Especially when its a fear of something non existent You got this
edit to add: Everyone in the gym started one day some have just been there longer. We all were the newbie. Just take the jump youll fit right in in no time7 -
The first day is always the hardest! We all have been there.2

Good for you Lee, for taking the first steps. I am in the same boat. Always hated being that guy. The fat guy. A joke here, a jab there by friends. I started my journey on the cliche Jan 1 this year, and am down almost 25lbs. 25lbs more to go. But you are absolutely in the right place. Please feel free to add me if you want. I am active on here daily and provide as much support as I can. But ask the same in return.1 -
I was the (somewhat) fat guy numerous times on first visit(s) to gyms. Now I'm one of the more fit older guys around. Never ever in the time between then and now did I judge anyone who was more of less fit or fat than I. In fact, if anything it was the opposite: I'm always happy to see people putting in the work. It means they've made the decision to be better. Most everyone I talk to feels the same. Even the gym "bros" more often than not are encouraging.
Most of the time, when I felt like people might be judging me, it was actually me prejudging them and what I expected their attitudes to be.
Just go get going. Don't look back.1 -
60 lbs is nothing at the gym. I was 315 lbs and 5'6 when I started. Just start going and you'll see people barely talk or even look at each other.
Do not worry.1 -
OP's a bit anxious socially and someone woo'd his post regardless.
The person who did it can shove it up their ... cat.
OP, try not to care so much about what others might think. In the gym or wherever. As you can see there are a*holes everywhere. I'm sure you don't care what they think, do you? Try to concentrate on your own comfort and peace of mind. You've paid that gym subscription and you can fully enjoy the experience there.
Have fun!5 -
@Lee1st1974 Best decision I ever made joining the gym0
