Is this a bad thing?

Going over things like your daily vitamins, your fiber or protein? I can understand the point in staying under the daily intakes of sugar, carbs, fat, sodium but I never thought of the other things. Protein keeps me satiated... same with fiber. Am I just not getting it?

Protein and fiber isn't bad to go over on at all.

Go over on fiber and protein, it's okay! Fiber is good for obvious reason (don't think I really need to talk about poop) and protein is one of the building blocks for muscle repair. Both help keep you fuller longer!

A quick Google search revealed that in certain circumstances (high protein, low carb diet; excessive exercise; previous kidney problems) that too much protein can harm your kidneys.

A little extra protein isn't an issue, a lot of protein can be(for some people). You will know when you get too much fiber( no need to elaborate).

I agree. As long as your system is handling the extra fiber without, er, complaint, then I can't imagine it's that harmful to go over.

Same with the protein. I feel like MFP underestimates the protein by quite a bit, and you do need it to build muscle, which boosts your metabolism, which burns more fat, which enables higher energy levels for exercise, which builds muscles, which boosts...

  • There IS such a thing as vitamin toxicity (it's called Hypervitaminosis [Insert vitamin name here]").

Hypervitaminosis A (too much vitamin A) can cause birth defects, hair loss, and skin discolouration. Hypervitaminosis E can cause blotchy skin and even raise your triglycerides.

I think you'd have to be consistently over by a long for a very long period of time for that to happen, though.

It takes A LOT of extra protein over a long time to see those detrimental effects. Go to bodybuilding.com and check out the physiques of the ladies there. Protein seems to be doing their bodies good!
