Not in ketosis

I have started the MFP since March 25th. I too have a hard time reaching my 1200 calories. I am eating a whole 30 diet. No grains, no soy, no dairy, no added sugar or artificial sugar, no legumes, or nitrates. I started the whole 30 eating on March 1st. I need to lose 20 lbs and I’m 49 yr old. I started the MFP to keep track of my macros. Today I bought Keto strips and am not in ketosis. Am I doing something wrong?

How many carbs are you having per day? And how much protein? Are you weighing everything? I am not sure of the rules of whole 30, so I can't say anything for that, bt to be in ketosis your carbs and protein needs to be adequately low1
-
I googled it now, and since whole 30 allows more carbs this is why you are not in ketosis2
-
Whole 30 and Keto don't necessarily go hand in hand. I would pick one and roll with it. All while making sure you are within your calorie limits of course.1

150 grams of carbs will not put you in ketosis. If you're wanting to eat keto, you'll need to lower your carb intake by a lot.4
-
150g of carbs will very much keep you out of ketosis.
But who cares if you're in ketosis anyway? Is there something special that you've heard about it?
You're trying to lose 20lbs? ... if that's over the course of a lifetime, then that can happen as slow or as rapidly as you like depending on your goals, though no one here is going to recommend dropping 20lbs very rapidly unless you're medically supervised. And even then, you should be speaking with your healthcare team about that.5 -

Whole 30 and keto are two different things.
Whole 30 is an elimination diet designed to help you spot food intolerances. Because it eliminates a lot of calorie dense foods, some people find they lose weight while doing it, but it wasn't designed as a weight loss plan.
Keto is a low carb/high fat diet that some people use to lose weight because they find fats filling so they naturally eat less. My understanding is folks doing keto aim for @ 50g carbs (or less).
Neither Whole 30 nor Ketosis is necessary to lose weight, you just have to eat the right amount of calories. I would think it would difficult if not impossible to do both. If you want to do ether, I'd suggest doing more research on them to make sure you know how they work.
All you need to do to lose weight is enter your stats here into MFP, choose a weekly goal of 1 lb per week, log your food accurately and consistently to hit your calorie goal, and be patient. What you eat while doing that is up to you.6 -
keto is 50g net carbs or less(most do 25 or less),moderate protein and 65 percent or more of fat. you wont enter ketosis eating 150g.you enter ketosis by eating very low carb amounts. whole 30 is actually an elimination diet to see if you have allergies and intolerances and for many that means very low calories doing whole 30. I dont know how you got that whole 30 would put you into ketosis. or that mfp would give you ketosis macros(it doesnt it gives you default macros based on height, weigh age and activity2

I have the same issue,no matter what,i can't seem to get into ketosis,i have had a lot of luck losing a lot of weight just by eating low carb but i never seem to get into ketosis.this past week i am doing intermittent fasting,18:6,my daily fat is around 100g,protein is around 65g and calories are around 1400 and carbs are rarely over 15g
I am 59 years old,5'10" and currently at 231lbs,down from 290lbs and from a 42" pants to a 36" over the last 8 months.
I just recently within the last 3 weeks started to take a good hard look at what i was eating, how i was eating and weighing/logging my food every day.I would like to lose at least another 40 pounds.1 -
Why do you feel you need to be in ketosis?
Why are you doing Whole 30?
To lose weight, approximately 20 lbs, you can:
1. set MFP to lose 0.5-1lb/week
2. get a reasonable calorie target
3. eat anything you want (including soy, grain, sugars, etc unless you have a medical reason to restrict them),
4. focus on a balance of nutrition, satiety and enjoyment
5. Log everything you eat as accurately as possible
6. Exercise if you enjoy it, eating back some of those calories too
7. See results in approximately 6 months to 1 year.
Easy Peasy!6 -
I realize what whole 30 is and it’s a way of eating that I have adopted. I understand now that I did not change my goals in the macro area to be correct. I have done so and will see how this goes. Thank you for the guidance everyone! I was eating too many carbs. I thought the MFP had adjusted correctly.3

So out of all that good advice given you chose to lower your carbs.... well ok
To lose weight all anyone needs is a calorie deficit, no particular foods or cutting out certain food groups are necessary.2 -

how do you know you are not in ketosis? another thing 1400 is too low for a male. 1500 is the minimum for a male who is short, sedentary, elderly or a combo of the 3. eating more of course wont put you into ketosis but eating too little you dont get enough of the right nutrients and thing your body needs, at your height (not sure what your activity level is) its too little.0 -

I monitor it with my precion Xtra meter,my ketones usually measure around .2-.4 so i do have a little ketosis going on but it's not at the level i would like,i want to be at at least a 1 or a 2 would be nice!.With my glucose and ketone measurements,my GKI us usually around 14-18 which is not ideal.
My macros at my current weight with a 20% deficit is, calories at 1690,130g fat,92g protein and 20g carbs,so yes i have been a little under on all of the macros but that should just be helping me lose more weight.I am never hungry and if i do snack,it's a fat bomb

If you're eating carbs to that level of reduction, you're ketotic. Full stop.
And I'll pose the same question to you. Who cares if you're in ketosis? What do you feel is so special that a meter telling you your blood levels is causing you stress?
If you're doing keto for fat loss, ketones are a happy accident that result from fat loss. Ketone production is not the goal - unless you have a medical reason that requires significant ketone levels. And based on your stats, you're not an epileptic child, so you can actually increase your protein intake, which solves the dual problem of not getting enough calories and trying to reduce lbm loss.
If you want to lose fat, follow exactly what @WinoGelato posted.
Set calories to a reasonable deficit. Set protein. Set carbs/fat however you want. Eat what you like, track with accuracy, and as long as you enjoy your meals, adherence is maintained, which leads to successful fat loss.2 -

just because you arent hungry doesnt mean lower calories than needed is healthy. faster and more weight loss doesnt always mean healthy weight loss. when you lose too much too fast you also lose lean mass(which includes muscle). Im a female and eat more than that and still lose and Im not highly active either.Im also shorter than you. if it gives you 1690 then eat 1690. and eat at least 50-75% of exercise calories back.1
