I obviously have a ways to go before I have a flat belly, much less abs. I was wondering if any of my MFP friends knew how to get and. Around what body fat percentage do you need to have in order to get abs. Also, is there a certain diet you need to follow?

No diet will give you abs... Simply hard work building muscle in the gym.0

It depends on the person, some get them at 15%, some at 12%.0

Don't listen to this advice.. this person is wrong. You can build all the muscle you want in the gym, but if you have a layer of fat over them they won't show.
From what I've heard and what I've doing, you need to have a pretty clean diet. Little sugar, carbs and processed food. Once you get that down and burn fat through cardio and building muscle, then the abs will show.0 -
Body fat percentage varies for each individual person. Have you heard the say abs are made in the kitchen...well a clean healthy diet is most important and on top of that you need to have a good solid workout routine, not just abs work your entire body. I don't work my abs as often as I used to because each workout that I do I engage my core, also helps protect my back as well. But when I do work my abs I involve weights to really get them to pop.0

Totally correct dad106... you need hard work in the gym, but from what I hear from ALL fitness pros, trainers... abs are alllll about your diet. Clean, clean, clean.0 -
i dont think there is a magical weight or bodyfat % that will mean u have abs.
having said that, i am fairly small build, 5ft5 and 127 pounds and i have an almost flat stomach but no sign of abs as my body fat is 27.5% so i know its a figure less than that!!!0 -

That's what I thought. I've heard about abs being made in the kitchen. Okay. Thanks! Time to clean up my diet some more. I've been slacking.0 -
This page is popular and shows pics of different percentages to give an idea for both men and women (very different). http://www.leighpeele.com/body-fat-pictures-and-percentages1

Abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym.
Having said that most women would need a BF% of 15-18% to have a 6 pack, to have the outline of abs you could probably be 18-20% depending on where you carry your fat.0 -
Go to scoobysworkshop.com. This guy has a free web site with bodybuilding tips and advice. It includes videos and articles and has sections for different types of exercises. There's a whole section on abs, and he agrees that diet is key. He even has a section for a calorie calculator and sample meal plans if you really want to get serious on abs. Good luck!0

I think everyone has the possibility for fab abs, there just hidden under our bellies if we are carrying excess weight around the middle section. Keep burning the fat, and I would have to agree with a clean diet also lots of water and reduce your body fat %.
I am not that tall and I am in a health weight range for my size, but carry a high fat count, and it's in the tummy and thighs.
So keep up the good work and stay positive.....0 -
I have several friends with 6 packs and am getting close to it myself. There are two keys, 1) a very clean diet (keeping sugars and sodium down) and 2) you need to develop a good muscle structure (I believe there are 12 layers that make up your abs and you should work all of your layers. Essentially, you need to have a strong core (from the knees to your chest).
Also, like others said, it depends on where you store your fat. I unfortunately, store mine in my belly so I need to get to a lower body fat % (probably 8 % ish).0 -

I suppose that I assumed that when the person said... "diet" that they were looking for some sort of eating plan. A quick fix.
I was referring to the fact that there is no magical fix to getting abs. Well, of course you can't have a layer of fat on top of your abs but you can't just go on a diet and expect to get them either. You have to do abdominal exercises combined with eating right. Perhaps I should have elaborated...0 -
Also, forgot to mention, there is no magical amount of cardio that will give you abs, you need cardio and strength training which means you also have to eat enough calories to build the muscle.0

Core streath is important to health and help prevent back problems and improve posture. It is a good idea to have a balanced core streath workout where both the abdominal muscles and lower back muscles receive equal attention. Obese people can have great abs and great overall core strength even if they are not so skinny that their muscles are visible in the mirror or to other people.
Personally, I don't find women with well defined six packs very attractive. It takes a special kind of self absorbed women to achieve a great six pack and that is just a big turn off for me. A warm smile and a happy disposition are much more appealing than a body sculpted by endless hours at the club.0 -
For me, DIET was the biggest help. I challenged myself to get make my abs pop in 5 weeks for a convention and got great results. Here is the link to my blog of what I did, but as stated above, a combination of some cardio, strength training and clean eating is the key. The time it will take depends on what fitness level you are starting at as well. More bodyfat, more time. I have before and after pics on my profile. When I started the Challenge, I was 24% bodyfat, I finished with 15% bodyfat.

It takes hard work and dedication, but it definitely pays off! Good Luck!0 -
You need to use a skinner, open up your victims belly, then using a very sharp knife cut the tendons that connect the muscles to the bone.0

It comes down to having the abdominal muscle to show and having a low enough bodyfat percentage. Eating this and not that and killing yourself on the hamster wheel is not necessary for abs. I eat lots of junkfood and don't do cardio and I am getting close.0 -

While that may work great for you, it's not going to work for everyone.
Some people it does take eating certain foods and hitting the gym and doing cardio. I know that I personally cut out bread except for 1 meal a day and my stomach is flatter then ever.. and I'm getting close too. Its about what works for your body.. not what one person thinks is best.0 -

Recently read this quote:
Abs are MADE in the gym, but REVEALED in the kitchen.0 -
I'm confused, you get abs by eating abs? When I go to my butcher what should I be asking for?
Love and peace, God bless.0 -
Doing a million crunches a day, situps, planks etc will not give you abs until the layer of fat is gone. So eating clean along with exercise to get rid of the fat...then abs will start to show.0

I agree there may be a few exceptions but for the most part it will work for anyone. It's called 'If it fits your macros'.....meaning if your protein, fat, and carbs levels are where you need them, it doesn't matter where those said macro nutrients come from. There is no clean food or dirty food nor will sugar magically stop you from losing fat.0 -

Not enough people use sharpies to their full potential. Well done, you!0
