Knee Noises

Hey guys, I am always trying to work on my lower body because genetics... yeaaaa not my friend in that area... Anyway, I LOVE squats and LOVE even more the results you get from them. My issue that is that I am terrified to continue or have any consistency with this exercise because when I do them, my knees pop. And anyone who has had an injury the knee is the worst! Not only in the pain factor, but the time it takes to heal such an injury. Now. Here is my fear. I have never had an injury to my knees; however, I am afraid that the noises my knees make may cause an injury, therefore, I go back and fourth sacrificing my progress thinking that I have to preserve my knees. I don't have any soreness afterward or any swelling. Please help me! Do you all think I am safe to continue with my squats? Has anyone else experienced this before? (I hate to call it an issue, because I don't know if it is)

Popping is normal. There's a half dozen or more different things that cause it from fluid to the angles the tendons rub against each other.1

If you’re not experiencing pain, I wouldn’t worry about it. If I walk down an empty hallway, I can often hear my ankle cracking and it doesn’t cause me any pain. I have to respectfully disagree about a knee injury being the worst, though. I’ve had my share of injuries and hurting my back has been worse than my knee injuries. Maybe someone who’s had worse than a torn meniscus or two would disagree but that’s my experience. Good luck with your workouts.2

I've had a few knee injuries and my personal "knee music" is:
- Popping/cracking (normal and expected for me, not a problem)
- Creaking (a sign of fluid/soreness/swelling, may feel hot too - needs rest)
- Tearing sound like ripping cotton (bone on bone crepitus due to my missing cartilage - stop immediately and reduce the weights)

noise without pain is generally ok. Take some time to warm up before jumping into squats. My knees make cracking sounds if i start squatting without warming them up. I also wear heavy knee sleeves and the compression helps eliminate the weird sounds.
