Does est. calories burned take weight into account?

I'm just curious how MFP estimates the calories burned for an exercise. Is it the same for everyone (i.e. based only on duration) or does it change based on your weight at the time you estimate?

Just as a test - using the Skating/Rollerblading cardio exercise as an example, and I weighed in this morning. Someone else who is a different weight than me, test it and post what it says for you.

185.8 lbs @ 20 mins = 197 calories burned

I don't think it does.. Whem me and my husband say for example go for a walk or whatever, when we get done, we both add it in, and it's the same. Maybe it just does an average?? But that's not accurate, because Somebody that it more overweight I would assume they would have a higher calorie burn? Maybe?? not sure..

    I did it -

    196lbs for 20 = 208 cal burned
so it must calculate based on your weight....
    hope that helps

Yeah, I was just curious - I have a HRM that I use most of the time, but I'm a geek and wanted to know how the database worked :P

Yes it does based on your weight. And they are not 100% dead on because more factors come into play such as how hard you really did your workout. It's pretty close though. If you can get a HRM so you know for sure what you are burning. I use MFPs estimates and they work good for me :)

I thinks so. As my weight has gone down the amount of calories I burn for the same amount of time on a particular exercise has gone down as well, and when comparing to other's calories burned for the same there is much variation. Any chance you and your husband weigh about the same?

I think is must do because i play netball matches every week and i looked back at the calorie burn for April when i weighed more and the calories were over 400 for an hour, now it is only 339.

It DOES change based on weight... When I started my first round of 30DS I weighed around 150ish and it figured my calories burned on circuit training somewhere between 230 and 250... Now I weigh 130ish and it figures the same exercise for the same amount of time at 200...

It takes into account age, gender, and weight. So if two people weigh the same, but one is male and the other female, he, unfortunately for us ladies, will burn more.
  • It must take weight into account. I tried it and I put in 160 @ 20 mins and it gave me 169 calories burned.

There's a big difference between what MFP & my HRM shows I have burned. I use the least one...would rather overestimate, than underestimate.
