I am starting a water fast. Has anyone tired it? How did it go? Any tips for self control and working while fasting?

May I ask what you're hoping to achieve with this, and how long you're intending to do it for?7

I guess you dont want to take weight loss seriously. Maybe next time.9

Water fasts are meant to be accompanied with rest and self reflection.
They have no place in the fitness realm.11 -
I am doing it too get rid of toxins and weight. I plan on doing it as long as I can. (Probably wont be long I have terrible self control). I am also hoping when I come out of the fast dieting will be easier for me.34

y tho?
I've fasted overnight to make weight for a competition. Comes right back on as soon as you eat or drink. I literally lost 8 pounds over night, drank coffee/ate breakfast and put it right back on.
Don't do that.11 -

You shouldn't work on a zero cal water fast. That is meant more for quiet contemplation. You definitely should not do it to lose weight.7

This is seriously a terrible idea and to be Frank it sounds about one step from an eating disorder. Please reconsider.9

What kind of toxins do you think you have that needs removing?
In this one instance having no self control and ending the water fast will be in your best interest. This is a terrible idea and no it won't help you with easier weight loss.5 -
Sounds kinda dangerous to me
Edit: if you're dehydrated won't the toxins in your blood just be more concentrated; i.e. less diluted?3 -
Well I was considering it since I am going to the beach in a month. Its scary for me all my sisters are smaller and there will be so many pictures15

How much did you intend to lose in one month?
You can start your calorie deficit now and lose a few before then and not have to resort to unhealthy and dangerous weight loss methods.7 -

A few pounds.. I will still be fat in their eyes. I would like to loose 20 pounds people who do it for 20 days can sometimes loose that much that quickly. Since no one is supporting this I can only imagine what the people I work with will say haha..15

Dieting doesn't get easier with stunts. You are actually better off moving into a diet slowly.

You don't lose 20 pound of fat this way. Sorry friend. Start logging your calories and eat in a deficit. You can drop a few pounds for the beach and you'll feel great. Plus you'll learn how to lose continuously AND keep it off...rather than a quick fix/crash diet.7 -

Whose eyes? Are you being bullied into weight loss?11 -

There is no healthy way to drop that kind of weight in a small timeframe. And people who lose a lot of weight in 20 days (unless they're like 200+lbs overweight) resort to unhealthy and unsustainable practices that always end up with weight gain after. There's no value in dropping weight fast, you lose a lot of muscle in the process, prolonged effort sets you up for a lot of short term and long term damage and often leads to binging and weight re-gain anyway. And if people here want anything for you they want you to be successful the first time. Properly.
Without knowing how much you have to lose, if the 20lbs you mention is all you have to go then set MFP to 0.5 or 1lb a week loss at most, use a food scale for everything you eat and be patient. You may lose a few pounds before your holiday. And stop comparing yourself to your sisters, all that accomplishes is creating misery.8 -
Not necessarily bullied, but you know how people are little comments and suggestions when you dont ask for them. Can really ruin my day somtimes..9

Don't give other people the power to ruin your day.
Learn to tune them out.
A lot healthier than a water fast, and a more lasting lesson.

You are believing myths. You absolutely will not lose 20 lbs in 20 days. If you had any clue how hard it is to fast with juice for 2 days you would not even be thinking about this and you could be risking your job.
Again, this should never be done for weight loss. Never.

Yeah people are turds.
Lose weight if you want to. But just do it the "right" way (literally mean the scientifically proven way) like us. There is support here.
Last year I needed to drop quite a few pounds for the beach. I started around this time was felt great by the end of June/July.3 -
I guess I'll think about not doing it then. Just wanted to try somthing new. If I think about it wouldnt want anyone I care about trying this.13

I've considered trying it for a day or so, not for weight loss, but because my ibs is acting up again, and maybe not giving it anything to work on but water for a day or possibly a bit longer (not more than two), it might heal faster?
I'm not quite that desperate yet, but if it starts getting as bad as it did a fewer months ago, it might be worth trying.
But doing it for longer than that is just a really bad idea. People eat food for a reason, generally to avoid dying.2 -

You're right, we're not supporting this. But we are trying to support you. You're proposing to do something that is at best misguided, that is likely to be counterproductive to your goals, and at worst may literally be dangerous to your health. We're trying to talk you out of it. That's support.
Let's pretend you actually successfully drink water and eat nothing for 20 days, and lose 20 pounds.
How do you think you'll look? I'm guessing it'll be haggard, listless; by then, hair may start thinning, even. Not a good look.
Instead, why not set yourself up for a moderate weight loss, start a sensible exercise program (including strength training as well as cardio), and get your nutrition as absolutely on point as you can: Enough protein, enough fat, plenty (like 5-10 servings) of varied, colorful fruits and veggies, every day. Drink adequate (not excessive) water, and no alcohol.*
In a month, you'll have lost 5 pounds or so, tightened up all over your body from the exercise, have glowing skin and shiny hair from all that nice nutrition and improved fitness, plus have an attractive energy and vivacity.
More likely result of water fast: After a short time, get cranky, lose energy, go off course, binge on All The Foodz, feel guilt and shame, achieve nothing. Which would be better than the 20-pound-loss "success", health wise, BTW.
(*Footnote to other readers: I'm only suggesting totally on-point nutrition without alcohol because OP seems motivated to so something extreme. Otherwise, I'd be saying "80% solid nutrition, a few treats for the joy of it".)
Seriously: I'm saying these things because I understand that you're an actual person, not just words on a screen, and I want to see you strong, healthy, and learning how to achieve your goals in an empowering, sensible way. Self mastery: It's powerful.21 -

I don't know that much about IBS to know if it would help but I doubt you need to fast, right? Wouldn't a liquid diet accomplish the same thing?0 -
Its so hard to go to the gym with my anxiety. It comes from being self conscious about my body and then I feel bad for not going and I eat my feelings..its a vicious cycle. I love running though! I wish some of my friends would actually wanna workout with me.5

Does your gym offer classes? Walking into the first one can be scary, but once you get past that you can sort of lose yourself in the experience. It actually makes me feel less self-conscious than exercising solo. Plus, built-in workout buddies!1 -

Running is good! If you'd like to do some strength exercise without having to go to a gym, consider a bodyweight program (you can do it at home with little or no equipment). That would carry you through the month, for sure.
Eventually (long term), to continue to make fitness progress, you might have to go to a gym . . . but figuring out how to work on your goals and achieve good results is going to be really confidence-building, over the long haul, so you may find your gym anxiety looms less large over time. At least I hope so, and there's decent odds. (One of the things gyms can do is introduce you to friends who like to work out. )
This thread about strength training has information about some good bodyweight programs for beginners (not just programs with weights and gyms).

You can do this, and achieve some good results by vacation time. Granny sez!
