I have tried it before. Just don't assume it is something that it is not. Slim Fast is a meal replacement shake. A good way to get some nutrition and cut calories for one of your meals in a day. I used to use it for breakfast on one of my previous weight loss attempts. It's just another tool to use to help you get into a caloric deficit, some of them taste pretty good too.
Be careful though, remember that they are meant to replace a meal, not supplement one. I knew someone that actually GAINED weight thinking the opposite.11 -

I'm doing slimfast and am on week 3, weighed in this morning and another 3lbs gone, taking total to 8lbs. Really pleased as it's been pretty easy and I'm under that next stone! 2st 5lbs to get to my target.
How are you doing?

I'm halfway through my 2nd week, lost 9lb on my first week which I was gobsmacked with. Am having the cafe latte shake for breakfast and the strawberry for lunch both are so yummy. I'm surprised how easy I've found it and how much the fill you up, I haven't been hungry yet !!5

It's just another tool to use to help you get into a caloric deficit. Basically, you just replace a meal with a shake. A single shake is around 230 calories, so you just pick a meal that would normally have more than that, have a shake instead, and there you go. If you're used to having a 600 calorie breakfast burrito in the morning, and you substitute it with a slim fast, you just saved 370 calories.
Slim Fast isn't anything other than that, it just helps with CICO.10 -

I have a shake (not slimfast though) pretty much every weekday morning.
Not because I'm on a "diet" or I think the shakes are magic or anything. I'm just not a morning person and having a shake for breakfast instead of making toast or cereal or whatnot means I can set the alarm 10 minutes later3 -

What Slimfast doesn't teach you is about calorie intake and how many calories you can eat to lose. Because that's what weight loss is all about - being in calorie deficit.
I'll just stick with logging my food and counting calories, its what got my weight off and kept it off.7 -
Man, I tried it in the 90's. Didn't work. Turns out I like to eat food, not drink shakes.12

Tried it years ago, lost water weight, learned nothing of how to control food portions, re-gained as soon as I started eating properly again because I was starving.
You're a lot more likely to keep the weight off if you were to eat real food in a moderate deficit and learn how to eat the right amount to maintain your weight going forward. That also has the bonus of not costing you extra money.11 -

Same. Don't get me wrong, I like a smoothie now and then, but no way I could replace a meal with a drink every day.
To those doing it, I'm curious as to how you will maintain that calorie count when you stop replacing that meal. Maybe it's just me, but as I go through the process of learning how to not be ridiculous when filling my plates, I have this thought hovering in my head saying "yeah when you reach your goal, you can live with this." If you rely on the shake to reduce your calories, what's the plan for maintenance?

Great if you want to shed a few vanity pounds say, before a vacation or whatever. Not so great if you want it to be part of a sustainable & permanent lifestyle change. Unless you just really really like the shakes. I, myself cant picture me downing a slimfast shake in place of a meal for the rest of my life.5

One shake didn't fill me up. I love the chocolate and cappuccino ones. Still drink them on occasion but not as a meal replacement. They aren't that filling.0

Did Slim Fast for a few weeks lost some weight (because I was in a calorie deficit).....learned nothing & gained all the weight back.
OP - have a maintenance strategy before you get there. You might consider a step down approach where you swap out one of the shakes for a meal. Then measure and log that meal (like people do in My Fitness Pal). Then after a time, swap out the other shake for a meal. Then measure and log that meal.
Slim Fast looks like a short cut "easy weight loss." But you are short changing yourself in terms of knowledge. Figuring out portion sizes for real food and figuring out what foods are filling will be necessary for maintenance because a smaller you is going to require fewer calories forever.4 -
I wish I could do slim fast for a couple of weeks just to drop a quick few pounds but every time I've tried it I swear those shakes make me HUNGRIER,I'm jealous of people who can actually stick to it2

I've been having 1 Slim Fast every day for breakfast. Sometimes I'll have two, the second one usually dinner. I'm down 30 lbs , and plan to continue this way. They're nice if you don't have many calories left, and they're easier to take on the go if you're going to have a busy day.2

Sometimes I'll start one, and realize I'm hungrier than I thought I was, and I'll save the rest of it for another meal, but I'll still keep the calories logged and it helps me remember I have to finish since I've already accounted myself for it.2 -
Thanks for all the replys. I have been weighed this morning and lost another 2lbs so that's 11lb in 2 weeks so I'm really happy with that. At the minute I am replacing breakfast and lunch with the shakes and having a normal dinner (logging it all on mfp) and haven't been hungry yet. My plan is to carry this on for another 4 weeks and then replace with lunch shake with food and carry on having the breakfast shake. Good luck all on your journeys.5

I love to use them to bridge gaps. When I think I'm hungry but not really I'll take a few sips and keep going. As long as they fit the calories it great!1

Oh make sure to grab the 20 gram protein vs the normal 10. They are much heavier.3

I drink a pint of semi-skimmed milk to help me reach my protein goal if I don't see myself hitting through actual food. Does that count?1

I started the Slim-Fast Optima plan in Jan. 2008. I started walking everyday, increasing time and speed over time. I lost 82# by Sept of that same year. I had a lot of support from their dieticians and THEY DID help you with calorie and nutrient needs. They gave a lot of suggestions for meals and snacks. It wasn't just shakes, it was also meal bars as well as regular, everyday foods that you would usually have on hand included with lunch and supper (for me). You could do their plan and never even eat or drink their products. I was very happy with them until they changed the plan to the 3.2.1 and after. I have kept off the weight and still stick close to my basic caloric intake everyday: Breakfast 200 (sometimes more) calories, snack 100 cal, lunch, 400 cal., snack 100 cal, supper 500 cal., snack 100 cal. As far as maintenance SF helps with that as well, slowly adding until you find where you maintain at. Of course your calories and nutrients depend on the amount you have to lose as well as your activity level. We all have to find what works for us. Best wishes on your journey.1

I'm just about to have my weigh in for my first week and I really enjoyed this week. It's an easy diet as in there's very little prep work - just your 3 snacks and 1 meal. I've been having a shake for breakfast and dinner and eating a proper 600 calorie meal at lunchtime along with my 3 snacks totaling 300 cals. My plan is to eat 1200 cals a day for a weight loss of hopefully 2lbs a week and if I forget my shake one day I'll just substitute it with something to eat for the same calories or incorporate it with my snack. Hoping it will give me the kick start i need... I can already tell my trousers are more comfortable on me.3

I’m a bit late to this party! I started the slimfast plan on Friday, have lost 2lbs in 5 days so not as good as some of you guys but it’s a start1 -
It can work for some.
It does not work for me as I have found I need to chew to feel full. I need chewing, fiber, and protein. So for me drinking my calories does not fill me up at all and thus it is significantly worse then a glass of water or coffee or tea and some solid food.
That said when I had my mouth wired shut for two days a decade or so ago with surgery it was the best thing ever in terms of can be consumed thru a straw.0 -

Slimfast is always my go-to when I need to lose weight quickly, because of the calorie control. I don't have to mess around and try to figure out how many calories I'm eating for each meal. Just shake breakfast, shake lunch and then 300-500 calorie dinner + 2 snacks.
Every time I've done it, I've lost around 10 pounds. But everyone is right- for sustainability, you have to add back in "normal" meals and make sure you're logging them properly or you'll gain the weight right back.

I am on a modtly liquid diet for medical reasons and wow slim fast is expensive. I mostly drink ensure/boost and breakfast essentials (which has the same nutrients and by same company as boost but cheaper grr) whichever is on sale that week0
