I am just starting to look for one. I would like one that counts laps :) Looking for not the cheapest one...but don't want to pay an arm and a leg either!

I've had great luck with Garmin and Polar. They've both been through a lot and lasted many years. Previously I had Sportsline and Timex. Both didn't make it a year. I am hard on them though.

Garmin 405CX. I like it for the following reasons:
    - chest strap
    - gps
    - compatible with cycling cadence sensor
    - decent website for tracking the workouts

Polar FT4...doesn't count laps, but it counts heart rate, calories burned, and time. And it works underwater so I can use it when I swim!

Love my Polar Ft7, its easy to use, counts calories, has chest strap, doesnt have GPS for laps, but it was only around $80, and well worth it.

Ok, I know this is going to sound weird...but how do you place the strap on your chest? Beneath your clothing I am assuming. Does it go beneath the breast? Or over?

The chest strap is plastic in the front and elastic around. It goes against your skin and works best if it's dampened before use (some say use saliva....I don't know if that's necessary). It goes at the base of the chest muscles or breasts. Surprisingly enough after a short time you don't notice it, if it is fitted correctly (not too loose or tight).

I like the my Garmin forerunner 305 not too expensive and has a GPS integrated. A little big on the wrist but manageable. The Garmin software is also great and can even integrate your routes with Google Earth.

I paid an arm and two legs for mine. it is a polar RS800CX; but it came with GPS and the ability to add other sensors and use it swimming as well. Got it off of ebay; but , it was still pricey! None-the-less, I love it. I like that it records every heart beat and stores a fairly complete report of your exercise periods. I can upload them to an app on my PC as well as online. Before that I used a cheaper polar which was also fantastic, but didn't have all the bells and whistles. Anything polar with a chest strap will probably serve you well.

I still wonder about the best one for laps when swimming. Some have suggested the polar F4 for laps but would it get messed up from water to land and vice versa?

I don't know that it counts laps...but the Polar are all made for water. I wear mine to the pool and have actually forgotten to take it off when I got in the shower once. I have had it over a year and have never had a problem.

I like my Garmin FR60. It's probably the least expensive model that has most of the functionality of the more costly models, it just does not have GPS.
