Hi Ladies,

I just had the MIrena IUD inserted today.. and I googled the phrase Mirena IUD and weight gain, and I found an entire thread with weight gain horror stories and women not being able to lose any more weight after they got it inserted, no matter how hard they tried. Wondering if anyone else out there has the IUD and is still losing weight successfully, or having troubles, or have gained. Any input would really be helpful, as I'm beginning to think I made a mistake getting this thing.

Oooh, I would interested to know too. I had a 'normal' coil removed and replaced with a Mirena last week to help with period problems more than anything else.

Never google stuff like this, you will always find horror stories.
I had one put in after the birth of my kids (nearly 4 years ago now) and I still managed to successfully lose weight with it in.

Mine has not affected my ability to lose (or gain) weight. I've had mine for a total of 8 years. I have been thin and chunky with it. My favorite side effect is NO TOM!! :D

I love mine, and so will you! I'm going on 7 years now using this form of birth control! No TOM, I can tell you if you obsess about it I'm sure you can blame it for all kinds of problems but from my personal experience I've had no side effects from it that have not been positive!

I love my Mirena, Can't believe I put up with pills for so many years. I have had for about 6 months. It has not affected my weight loss efforts one bit. I was normally losing 3-4 pounds a month and have continued with the same weight loss pattern. I also know at least 20 women of varying shapes and sizes, with both healthy and unhealthy lifestyles and not one of these women associates weight with their Mirena. I agree with one of the comments below, you are always going to find horror stories on the internet, but consider the source before you begin to question your decision.

I get no TOM, but still all the symptoms, boobs hurt, very bloated, and I turn into a super-mega b!tch who can start crying at the drop of a hat. And THAT was never me before. I think this THING has messed me up and changed me. It also took away 100% of my libido. DH jokes THAT'S why it's birth control, because you just don't have sex ever again.

I had the Mirena fitted just over 3 years ago and it's the best thing I ever did ! As for the losing weight part .... I joined a slimming club last year and managed to lose 42lbs in 5 months. Since joining MFP about 12 days ago I have so far lost 4lbs !

I have one too (nearly 5 years) and it has been great as others have said. In that time my weight has been up and down but I don't think that could be blamed on the Mirena! Now I am trying to lose weight it is coming off relatively easily.

There isn't a ton of research into the exact reason why progesterone tends to make women gain weight (its the hormone in Depo Provera and the Mirena), but most of it seems to point to increased appetite and food cravings.

What worked for me with Depo was acknowledging my craving rather then ignoring it and satisfying it with a healthy alternative.
