Herbalife successes and failures

Hi Everyone!
I just started adding Herbalife shake mix into my nutritional routine. Usually for my mid morning snack and right after a workout. It was recommended to me by my bootcamp coach and am only a week in. I can't tell yet if I'm retaining muscle, but I am trying to beef up my arms.
Any advice? How did you retain muscle? Any Herbalife pitfalls I should avoid?

Can you get a refund?25

You should avoid spending your money on MLMs. Did your coach sell you the stuff?16

Spend your money elsewhere. Go to GNC and get an organic plant based protein11

Herbalife = Failure13

In order to retain muscle while working out and losing weight, you need to not lose weight too quickly, incorporate adequate resistance training, and eat enough protein.
The value of herbalife, like any other shake, would be helping you reach your protein goal. The pitfall is it is obnoxiously overpriced, and you will eventually be pressured to sell it yourself.12 -
Protein powder is cheaper and you'll get better muscle results.10

They're still around? I remember I was approached by one in the 90s and thought "I'm not trying to lose weight, and if I were, why the hell would I want to do this to myself? I love food"
As for your question, for muscle retention you need 3 things:
1. Progressive resistance training
2. Enough protein
3. A reasonable calorie deficit
Herbalife or not, the pitfall to avoid would be losing weight too fast on a low protein diet and no resistance training. Also, if I were you I wouldn't buy herbalife again. If you want a shake for convenience, a protein shake would be cheaper and better in terms of protein per calorie.7 -
Interesting.
So what's the deal with Herbalife? Does it not work?4 -
It is all about you, not anyone else's product. One of my friends logs tremendous exercise calories and very steadily posts more and more weight losses. We've been mfp co-travelers for 2 years and I thought I was impressed with his work, his dedication, his devotion to changing his life, then he goes and gives all the credit to Herbalife. Dude! It's you who does the work to gain weight, and you who does the work to lose it. Own it either way. Life works out better that way when you take charge of you.14

It's just crappy protein powder with some scammy ingredients added. You could buy a tub of protein powder, a bag of coffee beans, and some store brand gummy vitamins at Walmart for less money and more benefit.
They're still in business because people want to believe there are elite, magic ingredients that cause weight loss and good health. But it's really the work you do and the habit changes you make that get the results :drinker:10 -
Interesting.

Works for what? It has fewer grams of protein per calorie than a much cheaper protein powder. If you're using it for the protein (which I understand you are since you mentioned muscle), then there are much better and cheaper options out there that won't eat your calorie allowance.
If you don't find hitting your protein goal difficult with food alone, you don't need to supplement. If you do, good old whey does a better job.3 -
My friend gave me for free one of those Herbalife protein.. I love it .. even more because I had all type of protein shakes at home and none of them controlled my hunger as this one does.. I think that they are great. I never had them before and I never have paid for.
I'm reading something totally different here from what I have experienced14 -
Watch ‘betting on zero’ on Netflix. Herbalife does not deserve to make money.5

What are you reading that is different???
If you like it and it controls your hunger, then that is your subjective preference
If you got a free sample, then the cost wasn't an issue.
Others commented on the cost and the quality of protein - objective points.
And the MLM marketing -that is not a point about the product itself though.

I bought a tub of Herbalife shakes which lasts for about 2 weeks, to replace my breakfast as i really hate waking up early to prepare. That was beginning of this year.
I do rmb alot of fat shaming and having to avoid so many types of food as advised by the coaches.
Ugh.
At the end of the tub, i had enuf of it. Idk how ppl keep eating that for years (or so they claim)2 -

Protein powder is available OT for half to 1/3 of the cost. And don't your coach tell you that Herbalife is "better" because of "natural" ingredients. Practically all weight loss/meal replacement drinks are MANUFACTURED by a 3rd party company using the least expensive raw materials and most of it comes from China (which by the way thanks to new tariffs, may go up significantly). Practically all of them have some "proprietary blend" and really give you no actual dosage of ingredients.
So stick to the basics. And if it's about weight loss, you DON'T need to have a shake after workout UNLESS you're lacking in protein throughout the day and not meeting your daily protein goal. Rebuilding muscle doesn't happen right after a workout. It happens the day after, so why would you need a shake right after?

We have Herbalife here (South Africa) and I disagree thoroughly with their business ethics - it is so very close to a pyramid scheme - the bottom feeders supply the upper levels and as long as newcomers dream of the big money, the pyramid gets fed. I have tried some of their products (never bought any) but can not understand how that very expensive rubbish can be sold as a "real food substitute"....7

All protein powders are created in a lab and manufactured in a plant. One doesn't really know if everything is consistent, can after can or brand after brand. Protein powders are denatured protein and I know, I know that they promise to heal metabolic derangement and speed your recovery. I agree with the Moderator on this one.0

You want to buff up your arms and lose weight and can't tell if its working after a week.. if you want instant muscle growth results you're looking at the wrong line of supplements2
