DIY artwork and home decor

I’m working on metal wall decor and need some advice on techniques to use and what type of medium would work best. It’s just an abstract piece that I bought two of from Hobby Lobby and painted white. I would really like to add color to it somehow, but I’m not sure which technique to use.
I have used a matte paint when making it white. Would watercolors sit on top and wipe off or would it stick to the base coat? How about alcohol ink? I also like the sharpie technique to give a watercolor appearance. I have an opalescent finishing in mind, but I’m finding mostly pearlescent paints. Is opalescent the same as iridescent? Can someone recommend a good product?
The finished pieces are going to go in my dining room. My main color is like a robins egg blue (curtains, rug, and dining chairs, but I’m basing my accent colors on the table runner I’ve bought which I’ve attached. It has a tiny amount of blue in it so I would also like to add more blue throughout to help tie everything together. Would watercolors work well to add the blue? It feels almost like canvas material. Would the blue bleed when washed?

I spray paint everything...wood, metal and plastic. Probably doesn't help you but figured I would respond. Painters touch by krylon is all I will ever use.0

I’ve been using spray paint for a lot of things as well. I guess I’ll try this first and see if I can get that watercolor effect somehow.0

Not sure how it would work but because you want some bit of translucent coloring (not heavy) you will need to layer on spray paint lightly. You might also try spraying then using a bush lightly dipped in paint thinner to give brush strokes to it.
Just some thoughts.0 -
I kind of like the finish of darker/lighter spots and colors not being even, but the translucent part was where my mind went with spray paint as well when I was trying to find the easiest way to do it. I was thinking I’ll try spraying painting it in spots and then spraying over it with a water bottle and hopefully the paint will spread out naturally and have dark and light spots as the colors bleed instead of just be drops of paint everywhere. Or maybe it’ll be better to spray the metal with water first and then the spray paint. Guess we’ll see!0

Acrylic paint (most any brand) mixed with Golden brand acrylic thinner.0

Will that help make it translucent or give the watercolor affect? I do have a sprayer so that could be an option.0
