Dizzy when standing up

Lately I have been getting extremely dizzy; tunnel vision; blurry vision when I stand up. It's days I exercise and days I don't. It has been going on for about 3 weeks. If anything, I have been eating a lot of salt lately. Not starving myself. Yesterday I woke up with a headache and it lasted almost all day - and I NEVER get headaches. I drink about 12-15 glasses of water per day. Eat 3-4 times per day. My exercise routine was on hold for a few weeks and I started back, but the dizziness was there even when I wasn't exercising. If your recommendation is to go to the doctor, what would be the illness/ailment they would be looking for?

It sounds like vertigo. It's unrelated to exercising and is just fluid imbalance in the inner ear. I would definitely go to a doctor.

I use to get dizzy standing up a lot when I had low iron. I'm not sure it's related though, it might also be low blood pressure.

My guess is blood pressure. You need to talk with your Dr. about what is going on. I hope it all turns out fine.

Yep, I'd think maybe low blood pressure.

I had a really bad headache and saw spots with tunnel vision on Tuesday. I think mine is due to a hormone imbalance since I am not premenopausal. I've had sinus headaches all my life, but nothing like this before... Could be iron as well... might want to get checked.

I don't know, if it were me, I think I would just check with the dr and see what he/she thinks. Maybe you could even be slightly anemic, neck out of place, or just a variety of things it could be I think. Since you never get headaches and you mention blurred vision and tunnel vision, I think it a safe thing to at least get it checked. Sometimes it is even a matter of a change in your blood pressure from a sitting to a standing position. Hard to tell.

I have low blood pressure and this happens to me when it drops SUPER low (which it does kind of often). I would get your bp checked out and see what is going with it.

Also, being anemic can cause some dizziness.

Dizzy, tunnel vision.... GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR!!!!!

Don't be alarmed...its very common...I get them too. Usually caused by the change of body position from a slouching/sitting position to a quick vertical position. Kind of get a blood rush to the brain, momentarily. Its common, but definitely something that should be checked out by a certified medical professional.

In the meantime, get up a tad slower, giving your body a moment to adjust.

See a doctor immediately. Your body gives you obvious warning signs when something is wrong...don't ignore your body. It could be blood pressure, it could be a balance issue or something worse.

I have low blood pressure, a heart problem, vertigo, I have Chroic fatigue syndrome and I am allergic to gravity. All of those make you dizzy on standing, I am always dizzy. Could be any of those, low blood sugar, millions of things tbh. You will most likely need a few blood tests.

I also have low BP and would say it's blood pressure related, though could also be vertigo or an ear infection as mentioned. :)

My immediate thing was water or food but it's neither so you should definately go to your Dr to get checked out.

    I'm sure it'll soon be sorted. :)

See your doc!!!!!!! There are many reason you can be experiencing dizziness. It could be from innner ear to hypotention.. my suggestion is when your getting up from bed or a chair take your time dont just pop up. when getting out of bed hang your legs over the bed then slowly raise your head. sit for a minute then rise slowly. if sitting take your time rising sometime sudden intense movements can cause dizziness. Id stay away from the high salt intake and keep drinking the fluids. Hope all turns out well for you.. feel better...

It's possible that you could be anemic. I have Crohn's disease which causes my body to not be able to absorb iron, which is needed to produce red blood cells. I have to get a blood transfusion ever two years or so to keep these same things from happening to me.

When you stand, your blood pressure drops due to the fact that more blood has to go to the muscles in your legs. This causes blood to be pulled away from your brain. This is not normally a problem, but when you're anemic, you have less blood which causes too much to drain from the upper reaches of your body, thus causing dizziness.

When I start being tired most of the day and dizzy when I stand up, I know it is time to go to the doctor.

If iron deficiency is the problem, don't forget to get a high amount of vitamin C and folate (a B vitamin, also known as folic acid), as these both help the body with the absorption of iron.

This doesn't mean that this is what is happening to you, but it is something to think about. Do you have any health problems? Are you eating enough red meat and dark green vegetables? If not, you may be anemic. If it doesn't clear up soon, you might want to check with your doctor.

But don't let this or anything else posted here freak you out. you may just be exhausted, or anxious, or any of a number of other lesser problems, and getting all worked up over what this might be won't help any. No matter what the problem is, letting it get to you will only make things worse. Stress is one of the worst things that you can do to your body. Believe me, as a sufferer of Crohn's, I know how bad stress can be. I have had 4 surgeries on my GI tract, and the stress caused by worrying about this has caused many more problems that what I would have had without it.

Are you taking meds for blood pressure? Are you taking any meds for anything else?

If the answer to the bp meds is no, I'd discuss bp with your doc as a possible thing. It sounds like you're having an event called vaso vagel (sp?) when you're getting up. Is it happening when you get out of bed, or wheneve? If it's bed, make sure when you get up out of bed, you drop your feet over side to floor first, then sit up slooooowly. This should help. And if it's happening when you're just getting up from a chair, take your time. Your bp may be causing your headache also, or you may have developed a sensitivity to something, but with what you've described, and because I've had the same thing also, I'd say ask about your bp.

Otherwise, if you KNOW it's not your bp and you're taking meds for something else, it may be from your meds. I am taking Topomax for my migraine headaches. It is an anti-seizure med that has shown to be good in treating migraines and it's working for me. But it does cause dizziness, and if I get up too quickly I have a little loopy going on. But if I run up the stairs too quickly I'm ready to lay down at the top! What I'm saying is check your meds (if you're taking any) and see if any of those may cause dizziness.

Obviously see your doctor. My guess is similar to others as in BP, however I experienced dizziness one day and when I got to work told someone I wasn't feeling well so fortunately I worked at a nursing home so they check my BP and it had skyrocketed! Everyone was shocked I was standing up walking around and had been all morning :( So please get yourself checked out :)

I've been getting dizzy too - but not only when standing up, but just sitting. I think I might have low iron and am going to try slow fe for a couple of weeks and see if gets better. I've also been really tired and have headaches.

I took my blood pressure and it was 114/77 which is normal for me

    Check your iron levels.

You may not feel hungry but are you eating enough? Are you netting at least 1,200 calories?

I had the exact same symptoms, to a T. I was diagnosed with severe anxiety. If that's the case for you, see one ASAP because it will only get worse if it goes untreated and end up with a 3 day stay in the hospital.

Oh, and even if you don't FEEL anxious, it could still be it. I refused to believe it was anxiety at first because I didn't feel anxious/worried about anything at the time.

All really great recommendations so far (low blood pressure, low iron, etc), just wanted to interject the possibility of low blood sugar. There's a tendency in my family for some of us to process sugars really quickly so if I eat something that's mostly carbs, like a bowl of cereal, I'll be hungry and start to get woozy after about 2 hours. I've learned that I need to eat a balance of carbs, protein, etc. It looks like your sugar is set pretty low on your food diary, maybe your system can't handle that low of a limit? Try eating a piece of fruit or candy if you feel dizzy or headachey and see if it helps.

It could be a lot of things. I'm not a doctor but I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express...

I had the EXACT same symptoms minutes before having a full-on stroke in 2009. Get it checked out. It might be a simple fix but at least you'll know.

I'm sure it's been mentioned, (I didn't read all the replies), but it could be a blood pressure issue.
I would schedule a visit ASAP.

Do you use MIO in your water? I loved it the first time I used it and after the second time I was having migraines and vertigo for a week. I thought I was going to pass out a few times too. I drink diet soda and use sweet n low occasionally, have never been sensitive to artifiicial sweetners until I tried that stuff!

What is MIO? I just drink from a filter pitcher in the fridge.

I feel fine. Haven't been dizzy since last week when I posted this...one day before my TOM. Last time I had dizziness I was pregnant and didn't know it. I was worried I could be again, but then TOM came. I even threw up the day I posted this - just foam - so I was really worried I was preggers. But looks like I'm not. I will take an EPT in a couple weeks to make sure. Man, when you get older (I'm 29), your body does a bunch of weird ****! Reading all your posts makes me terrified to get any older!!!!! Thanks for all of your help!
  • Pretty much everyone has said it: vertigo, low or high BP, heart condition. I would go to the doctor and see what's going on. They will probably want to do an orthostatic blood pressure on your (or if you have an at home BP cuff, you can do it yourself) where you take your BP laying down, sitting and standing to note the difference. If it is a heart concern, you will have to wear a Holter monitor in many cases to keep track of your heart's activity. OR it could be completely normal if you stand too quickly. The only way to know is tests!

I started taking Slow FE on Friday because the dizziness seemed to be coming on more frequently. I haven't had a dizzy spell since - I think it may have been low iron for me
