Sugar?

Hi, I'm pretty new to this so please be patient with me. I have been having problems with food for a while, which means I suffer a lot after eating. I've tried cutting out dairy and gluten which helped but I'm struggling with getting carbs into my diet. I eat chocolate and marshmallows a lot to get my energy levels up, but I react badly to sugar (even from the sugar from carbohydrates like potatoes) if I have too much. It's hard to evaluate all the food I eat, so does anyone have any suggestions, can I afford to stop eating sweet things altogether or just try to cut it down? Also, does anyone else experience anything like this? Because I haven't met anyone with simular or so many problems with food as I do.

I'm confused.... Marshmallows are practically pure sugar?
How do you react badly to sugar? Have you seen a Dr about this - what is actually wrong with you? (if you haven't seen a Dr, that sounds like a good first step, followed by a visit to a dietician)5 -
Agree with LLLC above. Dr visit sounds like a good first step!0

Hello, yeah, I went to the doctor about heart palpitations over a year ago because they're the first and only symptom I had for about 6 months, so I was referred to a cardiologist, I'm still waiting for the appointment. It's got worse recently with more symptoms and we went back to the doctors, they tested something to do with gut bacteria but it all came back normal. They never mentioned anything about a dietition though so I've never been to one.0

And about marshmallows, I can have a handful of little hot chocolate marshmallows.3

If you can eat chocolate and marshmallows with no problems sugar isn’t your problem. Maybe fiber? I have heard of people having trouble with that. Can you eat any whole grains? Are there any veggies that don’t give you issues? I would either see a specialist as mentioned or research doing an elimination diet to try to find what’s actually giving you problems.3

What kind of problems are you talking about? Digestive issues? Pain? Heart palpitations?
Are you keeping a food diary and tracking what symptoms follow which meals?
Having said that, you don't have to eat a specific amount of carbs. Is there a reason you think you aren't eating enough?2 -
I'll explain further, I have problems with dairy, gluten so no grains at all, bananas and too much sugar, I have to be careful about fried foods and the carbohydrates I eat throughout the day. The symptoms I'm having are heart palpitations, nausia, muscle weakness, dizzyness and headaches, stomach cramps, painful bloating and tiredness that I've never really experienced before. A bit like what you feel when you have a virus. I've had bad episodes where I've had to lie down several times, but I have all these symptoms most days and what I eat is definately related to the heart palpitations and stomach problems. My mum did nutrition in uni so she has helped me with eating enough, I'm hungry and I don't feel like I need to eat more, so I think I'm not eating enough. And I've been tracking everything on this app.1

Doctors never recommend dietitians/nutritionists. They just want us to pop pills. Have you tried using MFPs macro calculator? It will calculate how much of your diet should be from carbs, proteins and fats. It's under Goals. Then track your food and follow that for a couple of days, then adjust as needed. I have adjusted my carbs down lower, because they also affect me, making me tired.
Most of the carbs I eat come from pineapple, which is my snack fruit, avocado, a very small amount of shredded potatoes I have with my eggs in the morning, and from prepackaged diet products (wonderslim/medifast) that I use between meals to cut down on cooking, and keep me from getting hungry. My carbs are under 100 grams a day. So when I say I eat potatoes, it is only 1/4 cup and 8 grams, PLUS I eat them with a protein.8 -
If your mom did nutrition in Uni she should be familiar with FODMAP.
Meticulously log your meals and your symptoms.
If you don’t have any problems with protein or fat I suggest you stock up on protein bars and beef jerky. If you are feeling weak have one of these.
A lot of your symptoms sound like “dumping” a feeling a post bariatric patient feels if they eat too much or too fast. Which makes me wonder about the condition of your stomach.
Try eating very small amounts at a sitting chewing well chewing slowly. As soon as the symptoms start stop eating.
I hope this holds you over until you get better answers.2 -
If you follow a keto diet you don't need a lot of carbs. Plus you can get the carbs you need from leafy greens, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. You probably have a lot of food allergies & food sensitivities. A nutritionist would be a really good place to start. Stop the junk foods and the foods that make you sick. If you want to heal you've got to be picky and committed to caring for yourself. Your whole family will likely benefit from improved meal planning if you talk to your mom about ways to improve meals for you.10
