Toning

Hi,
So, I’ve lost 37 pounds and have been doing mostly cardio with some weights. My skin is starting to sag a bit and I definitely to tone up. What are the best exercises? High reps-low weight? High weight-less reps?
Thanks,
Holly

depends on what you want to do
if you want to lift, there are beginner lifting programs. i think there are links in the fitness stickies.
otherwise, bodyweight exercises can help build muscle mass too2 -
If you are wanting to build muscle, you should go for a higher weight, lower reps. If you are wanting to work on muscular endurance, aim for lower weight, higher reps. Muscular endurance will also build muscle, but you will see more muscle growth with higher weight, lower reps.
I workout in total body sessions, and I do a combination of the two. One day I will focus on doing higher reps with a lower weight, while others I go heavier. Don' tbe afraid to do fewer reps with a higher weight..you will be amazed what your body can do! Aim for at least 8 reps (with an eventual goal of 10-12) when using a higher weight.0 -
To fill in that loose skin you will need to replace it with muscle mass. I.e. a structured lifting program(designed by someone who does it for a living) and a caloric surplus to fuel the regrowth of muscle.
Otherwise you can merely slow down the weight loss and allow the skin sufficient time to tighten to which there is no guarantee as to the degree that it will or the time frame it might take.
Ontop of that. Toning is a word that was put into circulation by the fitness industry to tell magazines and other products. It has no mean with people who aren't caught in that money loop. If you would like definition(which is the reduction of fat through adeficit to reveal underlying muscle)how ever. You can continue your weight loss or follow the above stated in regards to increasing your total lean body mass.
I hope this helps in some way or another.3 -
Here's a great read on what "toning" is and how to do it: https://www.aworkoutroutine.com/muscle-tone/0

If you want to tighten up lose skin. You can either wait and hope or get surgery. You cant exercise skin or fat.1

Are you at goal weight now, or only part way? If only part way, loose skin sometimes looks worse at that stage, because there can still be a layer of soft fat conspiring with gravity to keep the skin stretched out. As goal weight gets closer, the fat depletes more fully, and appearance improves. It varies with age and genetics, but even at goal weight, loose skin can keep shrinking for quite a while. (Even at age 60+, mine kept shrinking well into year 2 of maintenance.)
Exercise may help, in the sense that exercise helps you be healthy and have good circulation, and both those things can improve your body's resiliency, including your skin. (Decent nutrition is probably also a plus for the same reasons.) But there's no targeted way to reduce loose skin with exercise or diet, other than losing residual fat and giving it the opportunity to shrink.0
