Why do the students I work with ignore me now?

When I started I wanted to be the fun hip teacher but I gave in so much to and now since I've been more firmer and stern they hate me and ignore me. I became a doormat and kids didn't listen to me and didn't take me serious when I'm trying to be. Some of the kids adored me and all but now they completely ignore me...well not all kids. When I said hi to one of the students this morning, she sounded disappointed and said, "Hi". She happily said hi to the others. I told her nice dress. She said thanks. She prefers her other teachers over me. Okay that's fine. I want the kids to listen to me but I also want to be cool and well liked. The teachers said I needed to be more firmer and tougher but fair. So one student he said, "I HATE you." When I started being more firmer and wouldn't let him get away with certian things. Now the students I work with....well a few won't talk to me and ignore me. I wasn't rude. I waa being a teacher. Another student only said hi to the other three teachers. When I said good morning I was ignored. The teacher said, "You can say hi to Miss Bianca." He said it disappointly. How rude.
I feel left out sometimes but just doing my job. Should I even care?
Am I being paranoid?

I wouldn't worry about being nice and liked, I would be fair and for gods sake don't be a doormat. They don't have to like you but they do have to show up and learn or fail. I would let them know that. The minute you stop caring about what children think of you is the minute they'll stop having power over you and might actually seek your approval instead, and if all else fails you'll have new students next time around right? Maybe start off on a more firm footing next time around. Also if you ask them to do something or ask them a question and they ignore you and you let them, then that is a problem and they need to be disciplined you can't let that behavior be ignored. If they ignore you when you say hello passing them in the hall then F-Them and I wouldn't be saying hello or attempting to be friendly again.

I would say hindsight is great and for future be firm in the beginning - you are not there to be friends and you have to earn respect not which can't be done by being nice. Then later you can loosen up a bit once you have set all the ground rules. I understand wanting to be liked but ultimately you are there to teach and get results xx

    The head teacher. Why?

Because, you don't let the inmates run the asylum.

Part of teaching is commanding respect in the classroom.

    Respect & Control with Education.

Much of public school is crowd control as it is.

They are kids. Why do you care if they like you? That's not your job. Your job is to teach whatever subject it is that you teach. Their job is to learn. Being a good teacher is having your student pass your class with good grades and retaining the knowledge you have given them.

I just can't get past that you need validation from children to be "a good teacher."

Well I just want to be respected. That's all I want. It hurts that they prefer to talk to others over me. When I volunteered to help, "One said, "No I want Mr M. I don't like you!" That hurt me but whatever. My best friend said I'm just being paranoid and a pain in the *kitten*. She said "Who cares if they dont like you?! Do your job!" They don't have to like you. So what if they prefer the other teachers over you? Remember? WE were kids and had teachers we didn't like."

    Listen to your best friend.

How old are the children that you’re teaching?

And how old are you, OP?

    I don't wanna be mean. :(

I'm not saying be mean, I am saying don't be nice ;) That just means that you are indifferent to their attitudes. Honestly kids are "brain damaged" they are not fully developed people with fully developed brains, therefore you should not put a lot of stock in their attitudes and behaviors or opinions.

How old are the kids you teach and how old are you?

    She’s purposely ignoring this.

Agreed. Maybe the students hate her because she only answers the questions she feels like answering.

OR she’s actually one of the students who wants to be a teacher when she grows up.
