SUGAR

I am on a 1200 Calorie a day and it says I am allowed 45 grams of sugar. I did a check with Health Canada and they recommend to lose weight it should be 25 grams.

As long as you are in a calorie deficit and getting enough protein and micro nutrient the level of sugar shouldn't matter. if you feel you want to cut back on sugar in your diet then do that, its certainly not unhealthy to reduce your sugar intake. If you want to have a higher amount of sugar in your diet, then likewise (as long as you don't have a medical reason not to add or cut sugar).

The main thing is you find a diet model that works for you.

You lose weight by cutting calories in total. Sugar doesn't matter. Unless you are diabetic, I wouldn't worry about it.

In fact, I changed my sugar tracker on here to fiber. I don't even look at my daily sugar amount. Sugar is a carb and I'm already counting carbs.

mfp often shakes its virtual finger at me for eating too much sugar (based on goal) at breakfast. I usually hit my macros, lost 63 pounds and have been maintaining for a couple of moths. I nearly always blow by the sugar total. It's mostly because I eat a lot of fruit.

Before you start adjusting your sugar remember it's not just sugar that contains sugar. A lot of foods contain sugar naturally. It never hurts to be under in what you consume but as long as you stay under the recommended 45 grams you will continue to lose weight. Those markers are really what you should not go over and they will turn red if you do. When you start going over in the suggested ratios you will find you stop losing weight. This is where a lot of people mess up. If you are eating a 1200 calorie a day diet you should have no trouble staying under that 45grams. Just because it stays you can eat up to 45 grams a day it does not mean you should everyday.

OP will not lose weight while staying under 45 grams of sugar if they consume enough calories in other foods to prevent a deficit. At the end of the day, reducing sugar is only going to result in weight loss if it creates a deficit.

I went over the MFP default sugar allowance every day while losing 50+ pounds, 90%+ of the time while the only added sugar I ate was some concentrated fruit juice well down the ingredient list of one daily 30-calorie tablespoon of all-fruit spread. The rest was inherent sugar in 2-3 servings of whole fruit, and the inherent sugar in no-sweetener-added dairy products (nonfat plain Greek yogurt, low fat cottage cheese, skim milk, regular cheese, etc.). My solution was to remove sugar from my diary page and replace it with fiber, something I was actually interested in tracking.

You will not stop losing weight if markers turn red. My protein was red sometimes, my fats were red sometimes, once in a blue moon my carbs were red. Sometimes I even drank - gasp! - alcohol. I still lost 50+ pounds in less than a year at age 59-60 while hypothyroid, and have maintained a healthy weight for 2+ years since.

It's calories that matter for weight loss. The macro goals are there to help us get good, balanced, well-rounded nutrition while losing weight (or maintaining or gaining, depending on our goals).

Calories for weight loss, macro and micronutrients for nutrition, exercise for fitness = best odds of good health.

I lost 127 pounds without ever looking at my sugar intake on MFP. Still haven't. I replaced the sugar column with fiber the very first day.

If you are eating a varied, nutritious diet and don't have a medical reason to watch sugar, I wouldn't worry about it.

Thank You all for the replies and feel much better with all your explanations. I usually eat below my Calorie allowance and now will not regret eating more fruit. Most all the sugar that I do consume are so called healthy sugars found in fruit and vegetables.
