First, let me apologize if this topic has been talked about before. I'm new and didn't see it at a quick glance. I've heard so much talk about heart rate monitors that I think I'm going to get one. They are all over the price range. Suggestions? What should I be looking for? Thanks!

My suggestion is a Polar brand...pretty much any of them will be fine. I have a FT7. They will come with a chest strap. I absolutely love mine.0

I also have the Polar FT7 and love it. I think Polar is the best brand, but as far as models go - go to Polar's website and you can compare the features and prices of each model and get one that fits your needs and budget. You won't regret getting a HRM...it's really the only way to know how many calories you burn...0 -
I have an FT7 too! I like it. You have to spend some time figuring it out. They have an online program too and you can complete challenges with other polar users. That's my favorite thing about it. FT7 is basic.. it counts calories & monitors heart rate. Mine was $170 and then you have to buy the weblink ($60) to upload your data to the internet in order to compete in challenges. It took me a year before I broke down and bought the weblink. You can manually enter your data online, but you can't compete in challenges without the Weblink. There are more advanced heart rate monitors that will track distance and can plan a workout plan for you in the monitor. Check 'em out online. I think the Ft7 is a great starting monitor from Polar.0

Another vote for Polar. I also have the FT7 and love it.
Don't bother getting a cheap one that doesn't have a chest strap. You'll just upgrade to one that does, so if your intention is to save money that wont work.0 -
I have a Polar FT40 and it's great. The only thing I don't like about Polar is that they use an old skool radio technology to transfer HR info from the strap to the watch so you can't use it with ANT+ devices.
Eg, I'd love to be able to connect an HRM up with my iPhone directly and so use it with endomondo.com, but apart from that, it's a pretty good tool.0 -
Thanks everyone! You gave me a good place to start!0

Another vote for the FT7, but do not pay $170 for it!! You can get them cheaper on Amazon. Good luck.0
