I am a transgender woman. Does anyone know if all gyms allow pre-op transgender people to join a gym as the gender they associate with? I live in Minnesota, and used to go to the Ivy Spa and fitness club in Minneapolis. I always used the women's locker room, and dressed and undressed, and showed there without a problem, until about a month ago. The owner saw me walking down the hallway and she followed me into the locker room. She did 'busy' work the whole time I was in there. I am worried about going back now. I have joined Planet fitness and haven't had any problems there. I like the fact they are judgement free. The only drawback to planet fitness is the fact that there are so many people using the locker room. I have to get creative when I shower, because I don't want anybody to see me and freak out. I go 3 to 5 times a week and love it. I am pretty sure at least some of the women know I have not completed my transformation yet. Would you be uncomfortable dressing and undressing around me? I am thinking about changing gyms because I want pool access. Does anyone know if I will be able to join a gym with a pool while I am in the transition process?

Maybe find a gym you'd like to use, and ring up and ask them. Probably best to speak to the manager if possible.

I'm a female and wouldn't mind if a trans person used the same locker room with me.
Maybe go and talk to the owner or manager and voice your concerns. They might be able to help you feel more at ease. Surely you can't be the only trans member at their gym so they may have even dealt with the situation before. You have every right to be there as a paying member.
People probably won't even notice. I know I wouldn't. I'm too worried about myself to even look over at the person next to me.

Totally agree with above, most of us are too concerned with ourselves to notice. I'd be trying to hide my *kitten* to notice. But even if I did notice, I can't say it would bother me, I would probably do a double take at most. Again, I say talk to the owner/manager. I think you should ask the owner that followed you if she has concerns instead of just assuming

Thanks for the input! I hate to draw attention to myself, so I am probably going to stick with Planet fitness for now. I have to get more comfortable before I draw attention to myself. Maybe I will check with the owner and see what she says. After all, if she stands with me, I probably won't have any problems at all:)
