I could tell you the story of my best friend's brother in law. He just had to have 10lbs of flesh cut out due to gangrene that went unnoticed because of his diabetes (nerve damage). Her brother had to have a limb amputated at the knee because of his diabetes.
Orrrrrrrr... I'd suggest diet sodas and sugar free gums! They are delicious and won't affect your glucose levels. I would not recommend too many Haribo gummies, though.. may solve your sugar cravings, but then you'd spend the rest of the day in the bathroom.1 -
The best cure I found was a tester strip two hours later. Suddenly the sugary treats did not have the same appeal. Have you noticed the dragged out fuzzy feeling when the blood sugars are out of control? Wanna go back there?
I slowly reduced the sweetness of my treats until I got used to just a touch. A side benefit of this technique is that I learned to appreciate the subtle flavours of the underlying foods.
I take tea black or with one packet sweetener.
Yogurt is eaten plain or with a little defrosted fruit.
Try a baked apple filled with walnuts and cinnamon. Have it with a little yogurt.1 -
I don't think you'll ever "overcome cravings", sweet foods are delicious and tempting and everywhere. You can get in better eating habits, but I think you'll have to adjust your attitude away from calling sugar a drug and yourself a helpless victim, and plan balanced meals you want to eat, and not buy or otherwise place yourself conveniently near too large amounts of sugary foods too often.0
