Walking the dog for 30 minutes really burns 130 calories?

5'6, 155 lbs. 47 year old female. 130 cals burned from walking the dog at a moderate pace for 30 minutes? That seems like a lot. ??

Use this formula for net calories burned walking...

.31 x Body weight x distance in miles

Things like "moderate pace" are somewhat subjective.

I just went and looked at my Fitbit app just for kicks and I took my dog for a walk yesterday, 28 minutes (just normal walking pace, wasn’t power walking or anything) and it says I burned 171 calories. I also weigh 155lbs.

Honestly if you did between 1.5-2 miles, that sounds pretty close to right. Depends on the size of the dog and how briskly you walked vs how many times you stopped for business.

I think it sounds high myself, but don't forget that the calorie burn you're seeing includes the calories you'd burn if you were just sitting on a sofa (basal metabolic rate calories). So it's the total of both exercise and general body functioning calories.

For me, my BMR (calculator is on this site), it happens to equate to about a calorie a minute (BMR of about 1450, 1440 minutes in a 24-hour period, so about a calorie a minute). So if a 30 minute walk reported on your Fitbit as 130 calories, I would subtract about 30, leaving me a net "exercise" burn of about 100...which still seems high for me, but not unreasonable.

50 calories per mile, you could conceivably cover just over two miles in the time, although that's pretty brisk.

nope sounds about right depending on a few factors, like your weight, continuous motion, previous activity level

I walk my dog for 1 mile, 2x per day and it takes me about 20 minutes. Garmin says I burn about 60 calories. I'm 5'6" and 155.

It does seem a bit high to me. About how far do you walk in the 30 min? The calculator I use gives a net calorie use of 122 for 155 lb at 3mph on level ground. That’s 20min/mile

Sounds about right. Next step, check how many calories in your favourite cookie.

I did two miles this morning at 4mph pace (without dog sadly as she was put to sleep 2 weeks ago :-( ) and burned 150 calories according to both HRM and Vivofit. I'm 5ft 9 and 13 stones but pretty fit (apart from 2 weeks lay off from gym post lipoma removal hence the walking). Usually daily gym sessions plus 50 mile cycles at the weekends at 15mph average so expect to burn around 70 cals a mile walking and 100 running.
