Do you eat before you run?

I've always had breakfast before I run in the morning but apparently I'm not supposed to take my medication at night and I'm not supposed to take with food.. so that leaves me taking it in the morning before breakfast and then having to wait an hour which means running on an empty stomach. I felt like I had no energy... wasn't awake (can't have coffee either!). I also could barely even eat breakfast when I got back even after waiting an hour, I had my normal breakfast and now feel sick. How do you run well on an empty stomach?! I hate night runs just as much.. I'm always tired in the evening.

No. I do/feel better on an empty stomach. Anything over about 8 miles and I might take some "food" with me, but nothing before.0

No, unless I have a long race, then I eat oatmeal made with water not milk about 2 hours before the start time. Maybe you just have to adjust, I find I have more energy if I run before I eat actually.1
-
Depends. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I typically run on my lunch break though, not first thing in the morning. So regardless of dinner, I haven't eaten in well over 12 hours prior to my run.1 -
Nothing within an hour of going for a run. Though if it's an early morning run, I'll have a coffee to clear things out.1

My weekday routine generally goes like this:
6:30 - Wake up/Morning Routine
8:00 - Arrive at work
8:01 - Coffee!
12:30 - Small lunch/Change/Run with the dogs/Change
*I had a problem with overeating on my lunch break in the past, so now I only give myself a small window of time to eat before I change and go for a run. In the past, I would go home and sit on the couch and watch TV and shove my face with food... ALL the food lol. I was eating around 1000-1500 calories just on lunch *face palm*. I would also "sneak" food when no one was around to judge me and hide the evidence. That routine was literally killing me.*
1:30 - Back to work
3:00 - Protein Shake
5:00 - Leave work/Change/Run with the dogs
6:30 - Dinner
9:00 - Small snack
10:30 - Bed time

I'm jealous you get to run at noon!!! It's about 95 degrees here with 90% humidity after noon my dog would refuse lol!0 -
Less than 3 miles i will do fasted, more than that and I'll eat breakfast first.2
-
when i run in the morning, i mostly run fasted. i have 1 cup of ice cream around 9pm. don't often eat a traditional dinner.
if it's a race, i eat a kind bar and coffee. or i drink a gas station cappuccino for easy calories
if i do eat something, i'll shove some toast in my mouth or take a tablespoon of peanut butter1 -
Your body gave you the most definitive answer. It didn’t like it. I can run fasted in the morning as long as I’m well hydrated.
Could you run at a different time of day?1 -
Like could you run after lunch?1

Haha They aren't happy about it most days. They get so excited to go so I have to bring them, then they get outside and realize that it's hotter than hell. We wind up walking/lightly jogging most of the time. I'm sympathetic to them because I'd be pretty pissed to run in a sweater I can't take off. Also, I only have a short period of time on my lunch break, so really we are only out for about 20 mins or so1 -
Depends on time of day, distance and if I ate decently the day before.1
-
Could you switch to doing stairs in an air conditioned building, at noon after lunch?1
-
i run at night. it's not as cool as the morning but not as hot as the day.1

-
2 cups of black coffee and a banana before my morning run.2
-
No as long as you are fully hydrated at weekends I will go running first thing in morning before breakfast for 5 miles, if I eat an hour before will normally feel sick1
-
I have a similar medication predicament. I'm on Synthroid and have to take it in the AM on an empty stomach with nothing except water for at least an hour after. Thankfully I prefer fasted. I feel so sick if I eat within 2hrs prior of running.1
-
Not usually. If a morning race I'll have something like a waffle with peanut butter an hour before. Everyone is different so you have to find what works for you.0

Hey same here! I'm on synthroid and cytomel0 -
I eat something small about 30-45 minutes before my morning run, either a shake/smoothie (8oz) or small piece of fruit. Any larger meal or closer to when I go for a run upsets my stomach.1

Wake up earlier, take meds. Then wait the amount of time suggested by your dr or pharmacist (1 hr).
You really need to eat before a workout to fuel your body it seems to me. I know I do or I have the same issues you have described. I bonk.
I try to eat my breakfast about two hrs before I swim. After a workout I eat a small snack until I can get home and prepare my next meal.
My meal usually includes a high protein food, some complex carbs, a piece of fruit, dairy and a bit of healthy oil. Without a decent breakfast, I could not swim as long as I do and end up feeling unwell.1
