friend request messages

When I get a friend request, ppl will often post a short message with it. I can't access it. How do I read these messages that come along with friend requests?

    On my laptop version there is a mail tab on my home screen - messages should be there. On my tablet (android) there is a message button on the menu bar. In my experience too few people send an introductory message with a friend request. Welcome and good luck.

    Go to their profile and click on add as friend.
