Diabetic - Concerned about Carb Intake

Wondering if the carb intake on the 1200 calorie plan is appropriately set to not run up blood sugars and if it does run them up, how do I adjust everything to balance it? I love having a food tracker, and the carb counters available are just not user friendly.
Thank you!

the number of carbs you should eat is a question for your doctor?
you can easily change the macro percentages though, in diary settings i think.4 -
Are you a type 1 or type 2? What medication(s) do you take?
The reason I ask is that normally a type 2 would benefit from cutting carbs as close to 0 as possible; but if you take insulin, it will need to be adjusted according to diet. The need to adjust insulin around quantity and time of carb intake is true whether you eat 0g carbs or 1,000g carbs.3 -
It's under goals > calorie, carb, protein and fat goals.2

You can adjust your percentages, but you don't have to necessarily hit every goal on there. If its too much carbs, don't eat as much . these things aren't designed to adjust for things like diabetes, etc.2

The MFP macros are not set to treat diabetes. As said up thread, a T2D will usually benefit from keeping carbs as low as possible. Some reverse their diabetes with less than 100 g of carbs a day (400 kcal) while others take their carb intake below 20g. If you eat to your glucose metre, you'll soon find out what carbs raise your BG and how many carbs you can tolerate.
I recommend Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution to everyone with insulin resistance. It can really help. Good luck,6 -
Yes, you need to talk to a dietitian or diabetes coach, doctor, etc.
I could give my values and experience, but that doesn't mean they are right for you.
I was suspected of T2D and was assigned a calorie target and carbs/meal and carbs/day. Following those, I was able to reduce my A1C from 7.3 to 5.4 in three months time. Fasting BG values started at 180 and I run between 90 and 110 now when I wake. Higher values come from those mornings after I've had some pizza, or pasta or some other carb laden meal.
But that's just me. I would recommend you speak with your doctor or other medical professional regarding what your plan will be.
I'm certainly not zero carbs at 225g/day and no more than 60/meal. But I do have better numbers when I stay well below that number.
I've taken it upon myself to drop my targets by 5% after I lost 10% of my starting body weight, now using 2135 calories/day and 214g carbs/day.0 -
Thank you all. I appreciate info from those that understand. Tbright1965 you sound very close to my personal situation, though your A1C is slightly better than mine. Good insight on what might be expected.2

I am a T2D and weigh 284 and have an A1C of 11 and am trying to lose weight, my total carbs are 35 to 40 a meal and 15 a snack. I need support and to be held accountable (nicely or I'll quit I just know myself to well), A friendship(s) would be great. I live with my mom who needs me there and doesn't eat like I'm supposed to about half the time. It is frustrating to try and deal with the diabetes and mental health issues as well, Help please

Your A1C is 11?! That's dangerously high, so you definitely should cut those carbs back. Are you on any medications?1 -
A few people mentioned 0 carbs???
Please ask your doctors/dietician about carbs rather than taking random internet advice. Too much is at stake.0 -

Carbs are a nonessential nutrient. You can get fairly close to no carbs with health and safety as long as you eat quality animal products. Few people do that but it can be done.6 -

I suggest you fine tune your carb targets using your glucose meter. Measure your premeal & 2 hour post meal blood glucose. If it is higher than your target (set by you and your doctor), then decrease your carbs and test again. The diabetics in my life cannot handle 35-40 carbs per meal- this leads to a massive spike in blood glucose to a value outside the range they set with their doctor. Following this procedure, one of my family members was able to lower their A1C to the high normal range and they've had their insulin reduced twice so far- all in 6 months. I'm not diabetic, but I've helped diabetic family members on their journey- send me a friend request if you want. No worries if you only want friends with diabetes though...
I recommend the book Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution for more ideas about controlling diabetes.

If you know the number of carbs your doctor recommends for you, instead of taking the "mfp advised", set up, it is possible to set the doctors approved settings in goals.2
