I'm going camping this weekend with a bunch of friends. i'm sure we'll have the usual hamburgers and hot dogs but I'd like to bring some lower calorie foods that can be cooked there too. Any ideas?

Also, anyone have any ideas on lower calorie booze?

Beans on toast? Tomatoes on toast? Canned tuna? Salad? Fruit? Tomato soup? It isn't easy when you're camping!

That's a tough one. I go camping often and I'd usually bring turkey sausages and turkey hotdogs for myself. Or you can bring frozen black bean burgers.

I am going camping too. I am bringing Turkey burgers for myself, and chicken. I will make sure to bring lots of water and veggies. I know I am going to have a smore though! The one thing my friend and I suggested was that the way we cook be more healthy even if the way we eat cannot. You also only eat half of the food, and Hike!

Grilled veggies are good. Chicken is good. I went camping a couple of weekends ago, and ate everything not nailed down, but didn't gain any weight. Probably because it was a 200 yard walk every time I had to go to the bathroom. That, and a day at the beach.

    Enjoy, just in smaller portions.
  • I swear that all we do when camping is eat! I make sure to stay away from the chips and soda. I buy lean hamburger and 2% cheese. Also - make grilled corn on the cob.
  • We have gone camping the past two weekends  We brought chicken breasts and turkey burgers. I also pre-made sloppy joes to reheat (made with ground turkey breast). Plenty of fruit (blueberries, watermelon, grapes) as well as carrots, pre-cut cucumbers, & sweet corn. For lunch, I stuck to basically lunch meat for me as well as RF peanut butter. Hope some of this helps! Have a great time!

If you are preparing stuff make some healthy type salads like broccoli-raisin, coleslaw, WW pasta salad. Again, turkey burgers and turkey brats are a good replacement. Opt for baked chips instead of regular ones. Fruit usually stays pretty good too (apples, oranges). Asparagus, potatoes, carrots are really good foiled up and on the grill!

I just got back from a week camping and I think I ate more than I have in the previous weeks, but I still lost weight while camping. Everything we did while camping was burning calories, from setting up a tents to walking to the bathroom, or beach, swimming. We also paddled around on our inflatable boat, rented kayaks and paddle boats. If you keep your activity up, I can't imagine having to worry too much about the diet.

    kebabs
    Red River cereal with raisins
    carrot cabbage salad

There are all kinds of wilderness cookbooks out there for the backpacker and canoeist that are light to pack in. Googling recipes for backpacking will also give you a great string of ideas.

I am just making my list for camping, going this weekend!

I am bringing a ton of veggies because I can eat them raw or I can grill them.

I also like making pocket stew over the campfire, which isn't too bad depending on what you put in it. And each person makes their own "pocket." You can find a ton of different recipes online for it. We generally use ground beef or turkey, potatoes, onions, green peppers, tomatoes, corn, a little water, salt, pepper, ketchup, mustard. You can make so many variations of it.

Corn & bean salad is another good one. You can eat it alone, with baked tostitos, on fish or chicken, on salad, etc. It also makes a good amount. The recipe I use is (I substitute regular ground pepper and sea salt for their salt & pepper):

    Have a great time!!
  • You could make your own granola bars... Bring apples to munch on... Grill chicken breast and veggies...

As for booze... MGD64, "lite" margaritas, alcohol + diet...

    Oh, I LOVE camping!!

Potatoes wrapped in tin foil and baked over the fire/coals. Just add salt and pepper!! YUM!!

Steak on the grill. Just add a bit of salt and pepper or maybe McCormicks Montreal Steak seasoning!

Pretty much anything on the grill is awesome!! hehe

And I always pack protein bars (10g and 20g) for myself when I need a snack but there's really nothing but junk to eat. Personally I like Think Thin Mixed nuts bars (10g, lower carbs than most bars) and their 20g bars are tasty (but unfortunately high in sugar). I also try to bring or buy fresh fruits and vegetables, because being outdoors always makes everyone more hungry than usual and the tendency is always to eat whatever is convenient/easy and that might not be the best choice(s).

I also make sure that I pack Gatorade, water and Propel so that Im constantly hydrated and not losing too much electrolytes. Again, I usually run five days per week AND work out, even on vacation. So this on top of being more physically active overall in camping makes for a big burn and potential to overdo it.

Hope you have a great time!! :D
