200+lbs to lose

Hello MFPers. I'm 13 days in to my 200+lb weight loss journey and so far so good -12lbs down (I know that's mainly water etc rather than fat but it's a nice boost to get started!).
I have started down this road many many times before and once managed to lose 100lbs (all gained back) but I've spent a long time thinking about and planning how to make it work this time for the long run.
If I had to label it I'd say I'm following a low-carb-mediterranean-style diet - lots of veg plus fish, meat, nuts, beans, full fat dairy, non-tropical fruits and occasional oats, bulgur wheat, quinoa. It's keeping me full and satisfied on around 1600 calories a day.
I haven't cracked exercise yet, other than trying to increase my step count I really don't know what to do at my current weight.
If you've achieved this kind of loss, or if you're on the journey too, I'd love to hear how you keep going over such a long period - I know this is going to take 2+ years for me!

Hi there!! Instead of thinking how you're going to keep going for two years, think about how you want to eat and move for the rest of your life, which you have to, in order to not regain. Losing is actually quite easy, compared to maintenance, you kow that - at least if you haven't prepared yourself. The weightloss phase should ideally be a dress rehearsal for maintenance.12

First of all well done for tackeling it again ! I just started my -100 lb challange so I feel you . I’m still trying to adjust my
Portions what’s the hardest really good luck through !4 -
my starting goal was to lose 190 so close to what you have. I'm down 37 lbs. It is getting harder, the weight doesn't fall off quite like it did in the beginning. i started out in february (kind of fell of in may and june where i maintained my loss but wasn't losing), my hope is to reach my final goal by next october, so 14-15 months. I too have lost a lot before and gained it all back (about 70 lbs eight years ago). I'm 29 now and want to spend my 30s living a better more healthy life.7

Hi! I've only just started my journey. I'm three weeks in though my goal is to lose 165 lbs. I'm starting small and focusing on creating one habit at a time. I'm expecting it to take around 3 years for me to get my goal. That doesn't bother me though. I'm going to be three years older no matter what. I'm in this for the long haul.8

Let me just say how proud I am of each of you for starting this journey whether it is for the first time, second time or whatever. I have been on this site for about as long as I have had a fitbit (approx 5 or 6 years I lose count at my old age..LOL) I don't have as much to lose but I have struggled to lose what I do have. This year (my 59th) I dedicated myself to making it work...and tho slow I am doing it. It feels SO good and I hope as you all are successful you will build on that and realize that you are doing the best thing for you and know that I'm in your corner cheering you all on. Good luck and congrats...you got this!5

Thank you, that's a great way to look at it. Two things I have done already to make this a plan for life - I weigh myself every day and aim to continue to do this no matter what (no more pretending I'm not gaining it back after losing!), and I'm finding a low carb approach keeps me fuller and more satisfied - I used to eat loads of carbs but was always hungry. These habits will hopefully make this the last time I have to do this!3 -
Strength in numbers I say - the more people join here, the stronger the support for each other gets. I am going to lose a total of 160 pounds - started in March, so far about 30 pounds down. I like not to think how long this journey will take - I take it day by day, meal by meal. I am also more thinking which food I like to eat, not which food I am not supposed to eat. Bread and other starches are my downfall, always have been. But I love cheeses, meat, fish, eggs and vegetables. So I arrange my daily meal plan around those food items. Over the last 3 months I average about 25 % carbs, 37 % fat and 38 % protein. This seems to be the ideal split for me and is easily sustainable. I have also started to walk - it took some time but by now I can move about for an hour or two. So far I can't really fit onto any gym equipment, but I do enjoy water aerobics which is on offer there. Do people stare? I am sure they do! They just haven't seen such a well shaped Adonis who can swim like a whale before!10

I just started my journey and look forward to touching base with others in similar situations. I am mid 40’s and my goal is 150 pounds. I’ve lost in the past only to regain. I am taking it nice and slow and incorporating new healthy habits to replace the old. My main focus to start is increasing my steps and adding more veggies. I want this to be a lifestyle change and not ‘just a diet’. I am trying to be mindful of all of my health including sleeping well and my emotions when I eat so that I am aware Of any habits there. Thank you to all who have shared! You all have given me a nugget of good!3

Hi there! I'm also on a similar weight loss journey. I'm looking to lose 200-220 pounds. Currently, I'm down 74 pounds in 4 months. Like you said, itll be a long journey, but set yourself up with smaller milestones (first 15, 20 pounds lose, etc.)
It's good to see that you're starting on your diet first instead of jumping into exercise - weight loss starts in the kitchen.
Good luck!4 -
