This has been a bit like "Snakes and Ladders" I got to 3 lbs., lost then skidded back to start. So I've dusted myself off and trying to start anew.

If you're having more good days than bad, at least it's progress. The other way to look at it, is that you're not gaining, so more progress. It's a learning curve.
Look over the last few weeks and see if there is anything you can change. Are you being too strict? Giving yourself unnecessary rules, like no eating carbs/sugar, no eating after 7 pm, no ice cream or chocolate? The more stringent your rules, the harder it is to stick with it. Have you make large changes? Tried to completely change your diet from the foods you enjoy? Maybe smaller changes and fitting foods that you enjoy into your diet will be a better approach for you.9 -
Build a lower wagon. Start from the way you like to eat and make small, sustainable changes that you don't mind doing forever.
You can log for a week or two to gather some data and then look back through to see where you might eat smaller portions of calorie-dense foods and/or make satisfying substitutions.
Each fall is a learning opportunity, not a failure. Think about why you didn't eat according to your goals and how you can adjust things to make it easier to stay compliant.12 -
Agree with nutmegoreo above: have a look what you have been eating so far and try to establish what you are missing on your daily meal plan. Work that missing item in your new meal plan, check your new calorie count. It is a slow process but soon you will find your "ideal" meal plan you can live with happily. Example: our daughter made some lovely cup cakes with sugar coating / icing yesterday just before dinner time. I looked at it and compared it with smoked salmon / steak / eggs / grilled chicken - no contest: give me some fish or meat any day!3

You are in control! The thought of falling off the wagon makes it seem like we were riding along perfectly fine then, boom. There we are on the ground with no idea how we got there. You know what you did to get on that wagon and if you stop and take a look, you can see the reasons why you fell off. This time don't jump back on the wagon, take what you know and go up front and take that horse by the reigns! You're leading this wagon where you want it to go. Sure you might get lost a time or two, but don't let it knock you off your course to your final destination!5

I think the fact you are acknowledging you veered off path shows dedication in itself. Everyone slips up, it's simply a matter of getting back at it which will make you succeed. Don't get hung up on that small mistake - just focus on the future, and how great you are going to do from here on out.4

I love this. Just chalk it up to a "diet break" and get back on track.
If I am having a hard time staying on track more days then not, I try to diagnose why It might be? Why did I eat so much this week? Was I bored? Was I stressed out, and stress eating? Was I just more hungry? If I can find out the root cause of my overeating I can hopefully find a solution to prevent it in the future. If it's bored or stress related, try finding something not food related to focus your energy on. If you are too hungry, find out what may be causing it. Some of the most common causes are calorie goal set too low, or you are not getting enough protein and fiber.
Always remember this is not a race. We would all like to see quick or at the very least steady and consistent results. But that's just not the reality. Long lasting weight loss is slow, and has many peaks and valleys before you get to your goal. Sometimes you get bucked off the wagon, and have to brush off and start over. Sometimes you may jump off the wagon to go sight seeing. All of that is fine. Just get back on and pickup where you left off. I feel like the first few weeks are the hardest to stick to. When you get off track instead of saying "Eh screw it. Maybe next year" (Like I have many times), Think of where you could be a year from now if you just keep getting yourself back to the plan every time you fall off. Eventually you will look back and be amazed at the new habits you've formed.5 -

Everybody falls off the wagon once in a while. I doubt you'll find one person who can claim they were 100% perfect throughout their weight loss and never had one slip-up. What determines your success is getting back on the wagon each time and proceeding onward, because it's a long-term proposition. Too many people treat weight loss like it's a sprint rather than a marathon.
If you go on a month long cross-country vacation and get a flat tire on the second day, do you toss it all in, give up, leave the car where it sits and catch a bus back home? Or do you fix the flat, get back on the road and continue your trip? One way you'll reach your destination, even if it took a little longer than you planned; the other way, you're guaranteed to never get there.6 -
