Wanted to hear what some people thought about what i have been doing lately. I live in an area with many hills. One portion I walk/jog is fairly level with a few small hills thrown in. I try to do this section for more of a cardio workout. This section averages from about 4.5 to 6 miles. The other section I like to walk/jog has a quarter mile hill on it. This hill is about a ten percent grade and i have been doing it up to eight to ten times a day recently. I have been alternating between the hill and the flatter section. Or if I am out past dark i hop on the elliptical and program it accordingly to what workout day I am on. The steep hill I feel is building up muscle mass in my legs I know this isn't weight lifiting but will this change up help with my continued weight loss? Do you think this is a type of strength training?

Anything will help, but no, I consider it cardio. You could TOTALLY add ankle weighs though!! I've never tried that, but I've heard its amazing.

I wouldn't call it strength training as what you describe is generally an aerobic move where you are converting stored energy via the aerobic pathways. Strength training generally involves utilizing energy stored in the cells (ATP) for power..

He can add ankle weights if he wants to have knee and hip surgery in a couple years. Even the packages they come in say to NOT wear them while walking or running.

As for the hills and building muscles, yes, you are building muscles. I'm sure you can feel it after your workouts. I credit my awesome legs with my hill walking/running and high level on the elliptical.

It's not strength training, but it is awesome cardio. When it was cooler and I was running I was working on running my monster hills as a way to boost my endurance and switch up my runs. When I run on the treadmill I always add a grade, I've found it's the best way to get my hr up up up.
