Hey! I am 26 and 142lbs overweight...that's like a whole person!. I made the decision two weeks ago to get healthy for my son and myself. My son is severely disabled and I want to be the best me, for him. About two years ago I became majorly depressed and I turned to food in the middle of the night. I ate, and I ate some more... Now I am overweight and I did it to myself. So I guess I am here looking for a support buddy. Someone who can give me tips on what not to eat and what to eat... What exercises are good to start out doing? I have lowered my calorie intake and have been walking. That's a start right?

Magazines and blogs are filled with tips on what to eat and not to eat. Here's a tip: Don't think about foods as good/bad, healthy/unhealthy. Eat what you like, but not too much. The best exercise is the exercise you actually do. So find exercise you like. It doesn't have to be planned, or in a gym, or even be called exercise, in order to work. Just get moving and keep moving.1

Welcome! You have had a lot on your plate!
I suggest you read through the post which appears at the top of each message board - lots of really good advice there.
I also suggest you keep it simple and don't aggressively 'diet' - change things one at a time until you are at your calorie target - making sure you enter your stats right and your aims are realistic. Slow and steady is good - that way the habits are learned over time and the weight is more likely to stay off. When you have a hiccup, and we all do, just get up and go again. You never fail until you give up starting again.
Eat normal foods, no food is evil! However, some foods will eat into your calorie allowance alarmingly and may leave you feeling hungry or short of some nutrients so ration calorie dense food sensibly, perhaps as occasional treats - and keep those portions small. Dome foods I have just decided are not worth teh calories and I can eat more food if I leave them alone.
Learn good food preparation and have a broad and interesting diet - it will be of great benefit to you and your son - those habits that made you overweight will have the same impact on him.
While exercise is not essential to weightloss it will make you feel better and enrich your life, find activities that you enjoy and will be happy to do forever (no point undertaking a 'get fit quick' programme if it is purgatory - you won't keep at it!) Walking is great! Gets you outdoors, into the fresh air and is a great mood enhancer.
Someone posted on the success board yesterday about how it is important to love the process as it is not a finite thing - the way in which you lose weight and get healthier will have to be the way you live forever - so enjoy it, experiment with food, be adventurous with ingredients and learn to love being more active.
The success board are great for inspiration. Many many people have lost over 100lbs and many have kept it off. Lots of great tips there - people approach it differently and you will find a way which suits you.
Good Luck - your son is going to love having a fit and energetic mother X1 -

First off think positive and take one stone at a time so instead of saying I have 142lbs to lose say I would like to start off with 28lbs and take it from there because I find having such a large number in your head like 142 seems near impossible but saying 28lbs is more workable. I have 66lbs to lose I want to get down to 12 stone but again am taking it one stone at a time. Think about an event your are going to or someone you have not seen in a long time but are meeting and aim at that to lose some weight, start cooking recipes fresh no processed foods, learn about your ingredients, spices, herbs etc so that you will learn to enjoy cooking and tasting it afterwards knowing its all good for you. There is really good support on here and if you fall off the wagon you can just get back up and start your journey again as I have done a few times, I have a thyroid issue and am 42 and my main goal is to get healthy and not end up diabetic or having a heart attack and in the process of that I want to lose weight. I snack on things like fruit and mixed nuts in work and popcorn at home, I still have my few drinks like a beer or wine if out but I dont have as many now. Track all your food on the diary here and you will be as the poster above says surprised at what calories are in foods you are eating. Everything in moderation that is what it is all about you cant live a boring life, exercise wise walking is a good way to start off maybe move onto swimming and when you have built up confidence and strength boot camp training is really good as its a mix of everything. Finally its not going to happen over night it can take up to 2 years so bare that in mind but it will be worth it in the end.1 -
Thank you all for the encouragement and the tips. I just went on another walk with the kids after dinner.... And boy do I feel the burn in my calves, thighs and booty. I'm having a hard time eating the recommended calories. My goal is 1600 and I only ate 231 and burned around 400. I just stay so busy I forget to eat.0
