Can a diabetic put on muscle and gain weight while controlling the sugar levels?

Im a 25 year old who got diagnosed with Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young recently and is on insulin. My weight used to be around 70 kg or 151lbs when i checked in with the doc and im 5'6". I was advised to lose weight as my LDL levels were above normal. Now im on 1600 calorie diet with regular workouts strength and cardio on alternate days annd i have lost 2 kgs or 4lbs in a month. I was wondering if this weight loss would affect my muscle gains and how to balance it? How much protein should i include to maintain my muscle mass while also controlling my glucose levels. Are there any diabetic athletes or fitness enthusiasts who have managed to balance the scales in a similar situation?

You're in luck here. There is a whole community of diabetics on FB just for managing the condition whilst being top athletes. There is also a book called diabetic muscle and fitness by Phil Graham. I recommend you look into these resources.
I can tell you it's totally possible to both improve your Hb1Ac, lose weight and minimise muscle loss - you can then bulk and increase muscle mass whilst managing your BG.
Add me as a friend on here if you need support. I'm on the same journey (Type 1 late onset) and I've gone from 300lb to 213 (goal is 195)
