Gents, i'm just starting out and wonder what the best advice is for losing weight (and inches) off the top half. I'm giving up the alcohol, and have a good diet planned, but wondered if anyone had any secret tips. Thanks in advance

Just a calorie deficit, there's no secrets.3

There are no secret tips. You can't choose where you lose fat from your body, you just have to consume less calories than you expend (calorie deficit) and let it take its course. Unfortunately, for most men, the belly/love handles are the last and most stubborn place to lose fat from. No diet, exercise or supplement will change that.5

People with secret tips are normally trying to separate dieters from their money rather than separate them from their excess weight. You don't control where your body stores fat first and loses fat from last.
You do get to control whether you are depleting or adding to your overall fat stores though - that's down to your long term calorie balance.
My main tip (not a secret and also free) would be to think long term both while losing weight and also look ahead to maintenance at goal weight - establish habits that support your weight management and your health. That includes diet, exercise and general activity too.10 -
Actually, there is a secret tip. Tho, it's already out there.......KEEP AT IT!!!! You may give up alcohol, start eating good, and even exercising. You'll hit your desired goal, then you may want to stray back to your old life. DON'T!!! Keep with the healthy choices you're making now. Make long term goals like the poster above me suggested, and when you meet those goals, make new ones!3

I wish spot reduction was a possibility, unfortunately doesn't work that way.
From the chest up my body looks amazing, legs are lean, the belly not so much. All you can do is keep doing up with your diet and exercise and it'll eventually work its way off.
Cutting alcohol is a great first step. You don't have to go cold turkey all at once, save it for special occasions.1
