eat less, move more.
set mfp to lose 2lb per week, add some exercise you enjoy - walking or swimming are good and low impact (you may want to get cleared by your doc first). be consistent, take before/during/after pictures and don't be discouraged if the scale doesn't move every week.
if you want a coach, you'll have to pay for one.12 -
Doubt you’re going to like it, but start a food diary. Years ago I read somewhere that keeping a list of what you eat was the #1 weight loss tool. Not even sure if it’s true, but that stuck in my head and it sure worked for me.
If you’re tempted to do it, don’t worry about macros, just a list, computer or paper, of what you eat and the calories. Use a food scale whenever possible. Try to hit your calorie target. But keep logging your intake no matter what. Even when you go over your number. Even if it’s way over your number.
It’s a pain in the neck at first, but as you gain awareness of what you’re doing, it gets easier. Set up a system of official weigh ins. Control as many factors as you can and keep a chart of your weight. You are seeking a long term downward trend and satisfaction with your life while you are doing it.
A plan that is making you miserable is not a good plan. Losing 100 lbs takes a lot of patience. Good luck.5 -
Start logging your food - everything. Get an understanding of where your calories are coming from and make incremental changes to reduce calorie intake. Use the mfp guidelines for 2 pounds per week.
Once you start that, I suggest reading through the success stories. Many have been in similar situation and have overcome many of the same obstacles.
Best of luck in your journey!4 -
To change your life, you need to take charge of your life.
That means no coach for you.
You lose weight like everybody else, by eating less and moving more - and the moving is even optional.
If you went through setup, which I believe you have had to in order to reach the forums, you will have gotten a calorie target to hit. You also have access to a food diary and an extensive food database. So MFP has told you how much to eat in order to lose weight safely and effectively and given you tools to do it. You decide what to eat, and whether to stick to the calorie recommendation or not.

When you have read and reflected on SideSteel's post, and bought a food scale and tried it, of course you're welcome to ask questions, and it's usually most effective to focus on specific questions pertaining to your situation. The general outline is in that link.4 -

goldo3484, you've taken the first step by joining MFP. Take advantage of all it offers. Set up your profile and target 2 lb/wk loss. Log in every day. Log everything that passes over your lips, food, beverages, cough drops, gum. etc. Everything! Make sure to drink the 8 glasses of water and log it. As you increase your exercise, I recommend you drink additional water. As you find people who seem to be on a similar journey or who are particularly helpful, add them as friends. Log all exercise. Participate in the forums (like this one). If one in particular is one you want to follow on a regular basis, you can bookmark it.
I have one other suggestion. Check with your local hospital to see if they have a registered dietician. If so, see if they will consult with you. You have some medical conditions and a dietician can help you understand what foods will help and which will hinder. They can help you develop a food plan.
Good Luck on your Journey. Be patient, Log everything, don't give up!!

Why not share it publicly here in the forums? Perhaps others reading the thread would find it helpful and could benefit from it as well.6 -
Well, so far I've lost 185lbs....
How I did it. Eat less, move more. Very simple, but not necessarily easy.
Details of how I am doing it
1. A food scale. Absolutely essential. I need to be able to know how much I'm eating, to know how much I'm eating. The more calorie dense a food is, the more important it is to weigh it. (A few spinach leaves on a sandwich - eyeball method is fine), avocado on a sandwich - that gets weighed.
2. Realistic goals. I didn't gain all my weight in a month, it's not coming off in a month. Setting a weight loss rate too aggressive gets old fast. If you set a very aggressive goal, and are frustrated by how little you can eat; that goal is not realistic.
3. Patience. So long as you're in a calorie deficit you will lose weight. But, it takes time, a lot of time. Yes, I lost 185lbs, but it's taken me 3 years (170lbs in 2 years, 1 year body recomp, 4 months for another 15).
4. Don't overcomplicate things. If you need a specific diet (keto, vegan, Paleo, IIFMM....whatever) to help you get started, do it. If you are miserable on it, stop, do something else. There isn't one diet that works for everyone. I can do IIFMC (if it fits my calories), because I am the person that can be happy with one cookie, 6 chips, or 1/2 a candy bar. Some people need volume (there's a whole thread on volume eating). Do what works for you, there's a lot of trial and error.
5. Exercise is not required. While everyone should exercise: cardio for cardiovascular health, strength training for musculature. It isn't required to lose weight. Again, do what works for you. Find exercises that you enjoy doing, try something and if you like it GREAT! If not, try something else.
6. Bad days happen. Everyone has bad days, weeks (I had a very bad, but fun month in London - basically ate and drank my way through Southern GB for 3.5 weeks). It's okay. When you have a bad day, all it means is that your human, so congratulations on being human there are 8.5Billion of us. When you have a bad day, accept it, and move on.
7. Weight loss is not linear. Plateaus happen, water retention happens. I recommend setting two types of goals. 1. Weight. Set small weight loss goals of 5-10lbs at a time. 2. Activity goals. When water retention happens and the scale refuses to budge, look at your activity goals. If one month you can do 2 push-ups, and the next you can do 10, that's called progress.
8. Lots of goals. Set yourself a lot of smaller goals. Set a goal, then achieve it. Repeat. Smaller goals are easier to achieve and each small goal achived is proof of your progress.
9. Master Yoda was right. There is no try, there is do or do not. Don't "try" to lose 10lbs, lose 10lbs. Work on it everyday, one day at a time, and do it. It doesn't matter how long it takes, just that you keep going
10. Don't quit. That's the big one. The only time you can truly fail, is when you quit. As long as you keep going, you will get there.
You got this.6 -
