I went a little overboard yesterday(Labor Day) and my scale says I gained 3 lbs in one day! I have been so careful for the past few weeks and had one "bad" day and gained half my weight back..how can that be?! I feel like giving up..help!

I've gained 10 lbs. on a bad day. It is probably bloat. You should lose it in no time. I hope that helps.1

Traditional party foods tend to be high in salt (even the sweet stuff) which can make you retain water. A pound is about 3,500 calories, so unless you went over by 3,500x3 (per pound you gained), it's water weight and should come off in the next week or so if you return to your regular diet.3

I have that happen a lot. I had to quit eating Chinese carry-out because I knew...eat that gain 3 pounds the next day and take a week to get it back off.
It happens. Don't beat yourself up. Just jump back on the wagon and get going again.1 -
You're not actually gaining weight. It is an artificial fluctuation. It is a marathon, not a sprint. Remember, one pound equals roughly 3,500 calories.2

I had the same thing happen i've put on a few lbs but am sure its water weight, but still discouraging seeing the number rise when you want to keep seeing it go down. Beating myself up has never gotten me anywhere! I'mma just be tightening those reigns up~1

Looking for an excuse to give up, or trying to figure out how your weight went up 3 pounds even though you couldn't have possibly been eating 10500 calories over maintenance?0

That’s water weight my dear ! No reason to stress over it or for it to make you feel bad. I know if you are anything like me that won’t help much but remember you are a person and you are entitled to mistakes now and again. I’m glad you had a good day1

Thanks all..I think I had a little scale hysteria! Thanks for your help and I'm back on it!1

I think our brains hate weight loss. On some level you know that you didn’t eat enough to gain 3 lbs yesterday. But your brain wants to seize on an outlier weigh in as a reason to quit.
Think it over. Does it make sense to pitch weeks of effort over 1 weigh in? No. Stay the course. And keep your guard up against your brain exaggerating small set backs into total disaster.1
