This takes soooo long

Hi ladies, I hope I’m doing this right. I’m 54 and started working out again and watching my diet back in April. I am down 15 pounds and getting healthier, it’s my patience that I need to check. I did a MyIntent bracelet with “health” as my word to remind myself of my commitment. Maybe “patience” would have been the better choice!

Patience is not one of my virtues, but I can tell you this much: the things that I had to be patient with, because there was no other way to do it (educational achievements, paying off large amounts of debt, weight loss) are some of the things I am most proud of. Will it take time? Yes. Is it worth it? Only you can decide, but I suspect the answer is also yes.16

Patience is hard. Time will pass no matter what you do.
For me, it's going to need to be forever if I want to not only lose weight but keep it off. I focus on the process rather than an end point because there really isn't one.
Hang in there.2 -
1 lb per week is kind of perfect! Not slow at all.5

The weightloss phase is a year, max two, unless you're morbidly obese. Maintenance takes the rest of your life.10

Look at it this way: what takes longer to achieve your weight loss goal, doing this or giving up because it takes too long? I would hold onto your "health" bracelet. Once you truly focus on health, you will not need patience. Focusing on health has this interesting perk of instant gratification because it's a process driven goal, not an end goal driven one - there is no end goal with healthy practices, you're either doing them or you aren't. Every minute of exercise, every day of deficit, every good night of sleep, every pleasant social interaction is a success. Health focused living is a collection of habits, not a goal weight. Every time you practice a habit you're practicing health.11

I feel ya, @esocha2060. Feels like a forever battle. I think I'm doing so well and then I look in the mirror and still see the same old fat me. I'm trudging along, keeping that slooooow sloooow forward momentum with you.2

Everyone wanted it yesterday.......so.....what's your hurry? Live your life and be true to yourself and your goals. Today has problems of their own without focusing on tomorrow!1

In the end, I spent the same amount of time losing weight as I did gaining.3

Someone posted the other day that, the weight we have gained wasn't over night, nor would be a loss. Just have to keep working at it😊2

This is the first time in a long time that I've felt motivated. I'm 53 and need to lose about 28 lbs. Instead of feeling impatient or overwhelmed, I'm trying to think "Everyday I'm getting smaller than the day before". We'll see if it works. Ha Ha11

Sorry I haven’t been on here in a while! I’m still trying to figure out how to use the forums on this thing. Thank you everyone for your encouragement. I’m down now about 25 pounds! August was a trying month with some business and personal travel, which always seem to disrupt my new routines. But I’m back at it and doing well. I’m looking forward to next April when I can see how much I’ve lost over the 12 months. My doctor said I’m doing well and I’m healthy otherwise!9

It's been 3 years for me. I'm still not at my ideal weight. The less you have to lose the longer it's going to take. The first year, I dropped almost 100lbs. I'm about 10lbs over my ideal - I'm hoping to get there by New Year's.
Time passes regardless of what we do. I can lose the 10lbs or I can not lose it, time will still have passed. I choose to lose the weight, no matter how long it takes.
Be patient and committed, the weight loss will happen.8 -

How long did it take you to gain all the weight?1 -

About 18 months. I had some big changes in life: moved back to the city for a new job and found myself getting into some old routines like plopping On the couch after work at my desk all day.
Just came back from spin class. I remind myself that six months ago, I could barely make stairs. Now I’m spinning a few times a week and do some cardio dancing!4 -
It IS a forever battle. I accepted that premise before I started. You don’t lose X lbs, get to maintenance, then maintain happily for the rest of your life without ever thinking about it again. You always have to be vigilant because every place you go, everything you do, is constantly shoving unhealthy food at you.
If you’re not patient with losing and maintaining weight, you’ll have to be patient with being overweight.3 -

Glad you're back and still progressing! I agree with everyone else. Take the slow and steady approach and don't stress about how long it might take. The time passes regardless.

Break your goal down into smaller goals. They are much more attainable and can give you something to look forward to instead of your total weight loss to get to goal. Check out my profile online if you want to get an idea. I have mine in 5 lb increments to help me eat at my 100 lbs weight loss goal.1 -
You're doing great!1

I gained 70 pounds over the course of 2 years. I’m trying to drop it off and it’s just not wanting to budge. I know, I know! “Are you using a food scale?” “Are you drinking enough water?” Blah blah blah. This isn’t my first rodeo (I’ve lost 70+ pounds 3 separate times.) but it is so frustrating. Turning down cake. Taking the stairs. Chugging water I don’t want to drink. And the scale is just like “hi I’m not budging!”2

The great thing about things that require patience is that you don't see your success as you go: it's only when you've gotten used to the grind of it and finally look up for a moment that you see how much progress you've won.
Another thing to remember about patience is that it will be April in six and a half months, no matter what you do. I figure it can't hurt much (as long as you stick to healthy methods) to see what you can do in the meantime.
