Is fruit in the afternoon bad?

Lately after dinner, if I’m craving something sweet I usually eat a fruit. Cherries, grapes, strawberries. I’ve had two separate people tell me that eating fruit late is horrible for you. I’m just wondering everyone’s opinion? Does it really matter on the time you eat fruit? Morning vs night? Why do people think fruit is bad for you?

Shouldn't you ask the people who are saying it?
I can't begin to imagine why it would matter. Your body doesn't know what time it is, and there's nothing wrong with fruit, as long as it fits in your calories.
Unfortunately, sugar is the current bogeyman in the pop diet and health industry.60 -
It doesn't matter what time you eat fruit - or anything else. Calories are what matter for weight loss, not what time you eat them. Why do people think fruit is bad for you?82

People think fruit is bad for you because it can have higher calories and it contains naturally occurring evil sugarz. (Sugar isn't evil).
Eat it whenever you wish, just weigh it and fit it into your calorie goal.

It's not a problem unless you're one of those people who gets heartburn or who has trouble sleeping if you eat closer to bedtime . . . and I'm betting you're not, since you've been happily eating fruit in the evening.
People will tell you all kinds of silly things. Roughly 98.3% of them are incorrect.33 -
Just to verify, I do not think fruit is bad. That’s why I’ve eaten it just about everyday since I’ve started my weight loss journey. I just wanted to see everyone different opinions.

What time do you have dinner? How much later before you finally go to bed?
It doesn't matter unless it makes your stomach uncomfortable. I just had an apple around 10:00pm and this is something I do quite regularly.4 -
It makes no difference to your weight loss.
Personally, I don't usually eat it at night because I don't have great digestion and it can lead to acid reflux for me.7 -

Be prepared for people to make random comments about pretty much every aspect of your journey, especially as you get closer to your goal. Hold tight to the knowledge that what you're doing is working for you.32 -
I nearly always have fruit after dinner, normally strawberries and/or blueberries mixed with yogurt, almonds, cashews and pumpkin seeds. It has not affected either my weight loss or my maintenance ... or my sleep for that matter.
If it fits your calorie allowance and if it does not cause heartburn of other issues which would prevent you from sleeping then go for it is my opinion.6 -
During my refeeds I have 800+ grams of carbs most of them before bed. When bulking I also eat my 500 grams of carbs before bed. You’re fine, meal timing is irrelevant for body composition5

I don't think it matters what time of day you eat fruit. I have never suffered ill effects from eating fruit at any time of day. Have you ever had any problems after eating fruit in the afternoon? It doesn't sound like you ever thought it was "bad" until a couple of comments.
Some people read dumb things or misinterpret things and think things are bad when they are not. Why did they think it was bad to eat fruit in the afternoon and what source did they get their idea from?6 -

There was a diet fad theory floating around some years ago that fruit eaten late would ferment in the stomach overnight. Maybe that's what the people naysaying your fruit heard somewhere and took it as gospel. Our stomach acids are very powerful and can break down just about anything at any time of day, especially something as easily digestible as fruit. I would ignore those people, they need to handle their own diet anxieties, not put them on you.10 -

Fruit isn't even higher calorie by weight. Foods with fats are higher calorie. Besides, fruit has fiber. Do you brush your teeth before you go to bed? Then you are good.8

Besides, opinions don't mean much. What are they based on? Check the source.4

You have to eat fruit between 8:47am and 1:23pm, else you'll gain all the weight you've lost back again, and then some. Seriously, find more intelligent people to hang out with or stop listening to the advice of friends (and MFPers) who are idiots. When you eat a particular food has nothing at all to do with weight loss26

Any carbohydrate, protein or fat is good as long as the macros at the end of the day continue to hit right. A flexible diet is preferable because it helps to use normal foods and, occasionally, something sweet / salty that is not in the diet. The macros should interest you. Hydrates can be consumed either in the afternoon or at night.5

Fruit is full of nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants, fiber, enzymes, etc. It's good for you. Anything in excess is usually not good.
What matters is the balance and amount in a 24 hour period. The whole picture, extended out 7 days, 30 days, 60 and 90 days. There is not enough information here to give an answer but right off the bat, no it's not bad for you, in fact it's good for you.

hell, i'm diabetic and have to limit my sugar intake but my dietician still recommends i eat fruit. if i can, anyone can. and time of day really doesn't matter sugar wise, unless it keeps you awake.3

I suggest that the only time of the day that you shouldn't eat fruit is soon after brushing your teeth. The tooth paste ruins the delicious taste.11

When I was young (a long time ago), I hated toothpaste and would always have a few sips of fruit juice after cleaning my teeth.
Fortunately, we get older and wiser .........3 -
I would ask these people where they got their information from, would make a point to never visit those sites or blogs, and would consider whether I really want to be friends with people who fall for such nonsense. At a minimum I would not talk to them anymore about nutrition and weight loss....11

All I know is any time I eat fruit instead of something processed, my blood sugar (I'm diabetic) is WONDERFUL afterwards, this is true any time of the day. So that's pretty much the rule I live by.3

Yes, 'must eat fruit on an empty stomach' sounds like the 'Fit for Life' nonsense I fell for in the 90s.

Scientific reception
Health experts and science writers have dismissed the book as quackery.[8][9][10]
The rigor of study underlying Harvey Diamond's credentials have been disputed, which has drawn questions about his competence to write about nutrition, because his doctoral degree came from the American College of Life Science, a non-accredited correspondence school founded in 1982 by T.C. Fry, who did not graduate high school or undergo a formal accreditation process himself. FFL's personalized diet program has been criticized for providing a "Clinical Manual" that is heavily infused with alternative medicine claims about how the body works, some of which may be scientifically inaccurate or not accepted by conventional medicine.[1]
Despite the fact that FFL web site mentioned "clinical trials", many of the proposed principles and benefits of FFL diet are not supported by citations to any scholarly research, and some of the claims have actually been directly refuted by scientific research. For example, a dissociated diet as that advertised by FFL is no more effective for weight loss than a calorie-restricted diet.[1][11]4 -

If you eat fruit between 3pm and 3.03pm you might float away like a helium balloon.
...
No, it does not matter what time you eat anything.4 -
The only way this can get tricky is if you, yourself suffers from gastritis or esophagitis. My doctor had advised to refrain from eating fruit after a meal because things tend to ferment and produce gas. Hope this helps.1
