Just cancelled my PT, should I get another one?

Just cancelled my PT, felt my motivation was not there and the training was not pushing me hard enough. Debating whether to get another PT or go it alone for a while. Any advice?

Motivation comes from within. If you need a trainer to push you then try another one. If you relied on the trainer to push you going it alone may not be a good idea.9

It really depends on your goals and how hard you can push yourself.
I have very specific running based goals and work with a PT to help me reach them, I'm perfectly capable of pushing myself, but she pushes me even harder.
Different PTs will have different specialities and approaches, and what works with one person doesn't work with another. There are several PTs that work out of my local gym, and I wouldn't get on with most of them simply because they are too nice, or too touchy feely. My PT is in your face, not letting me get away with anything and pushing me to my absolute limits, we also train outside using everyday objects such as flights of stairs (squat jumping up a flight of stairs is an experience)2 -
I got a P.T. when my surgeon told me to lose weight before I could have surgery. I have been working with him for over a year and would be lost without him. I have regular reviews and he helps me set goals. My first goal was to walk. I am doing that quite well now. I am much stronger and fitter. I no longer have fatty liver and I am no longer pre-diabetic. I won't go it alone, I don't need motivating but I do need my P.T. to set my programme and help me when my weight plateus.0

PT as in Physical therapist or personal trainer?4

I’m not in your head. Does it help to have an accountability partner? It might be cheaper to join a club. Around here the running club is free every Wednesday and Sunday.2

I think you answered your own question. If your previous trainer didn't push you hard enough, I don't see how you're going to do that for yourself.3

I guess it depends.
Were you not able to communicate with the trainer you had? Were you working with them a long time? Was it personality/style conflict, lack of skill or a communication problem?
Have you tried working alone before? Do you have goals and knowledge of how to achieve them?
I suppose my advice would be to write out what you want to accomplish and what you would want from a trainer if you choose one. Maybe list the positives of your experience with your previous trainer and then the negatives.
I think you mostly have to provide motivation yourself. Having some very specific goals can help.0 -

I don't understand how YOUR lack of "motivation" is the fault of your PT. Perhaps, the training your past trainer supplied was lacking because your effort was lacking? If YOUR "motivation" is lacking, "go(ing) it alone" is probably not optimal.5 -

This.
The way I see it, they can be helpful, but they can't do miracles. If you can't motivate yourself to achieve something, what makes you think a personal trainer will make that much difference!
How long have been using a PT? Did you have a chat with him/her about this? It depending your physical conditions, he/she may decided to don't push too much at the moment. I think it's important to be honest with your trainer. If you don't like a certain move or you aren't happy with your schedule, tell him or her.1 -

So how would getting another PT change your motivation and do you think going at it alone will spur your motivation? If so how? Were you making any progress with the PT?1 -

I think it's the other way around: If you cannot push yourself, no one else will be able to push you. After all, motivation comes from within.1 -
No can really do it for us. Willpower runs out. You have to find the greater purpose for changing your life or it will not last over the long haul, way down the road.1

This. It's not the PT's fault if the client isn't in the game.1 -
Are there classes you can go to so that you still have other people to help motivate you? I find that I work much harder in a class than I do alone - if left to my own devices, I can easily come up with reasons for why I can't workout. I've been using class pass as a way to try out lots of different classes for a fraction of the cost2

Since everyone already commented on the motivation aspect, I'm only going to comment on the training not pushing you hard enough.
Regarding that, you need to communicate with your trainer. Just a quick comment like "these weights feel too light", for example, should do.1 -

I agree. But a good trainer can have the right tone and approach that keeps you focused on the task at hand. Also, having a set time to meet your trainer provides accountability and develops a habit. Some people need a bit of a push (Hawthorne Effect).1 -
Thankyou for all your comments, PT was not giving me 100% the last few weeks seemed his head was elsewhere with private life. I did ask him to change it up, be still did the same thing. I am going to go to classes and swimming as well as the gym for a while and really think about getting a new PT. thanks again 😊0
