Keto & Intermittent Fasting

Hi guys I’m looking for answers in relation to Keto and IF. Starting 16:8 and wondering what others do? Do you have coffee in the morning still? Does it break fast if you have cream in coffee or bulletproof coffee?
Did you see results after incorporating fasting and did you feel better overall?
Thanks 😊

I had coffee before breakfast, and I didn't consider black coffee to break my fast, only things with calories. When I came to my senses, after around a year, I realized a specific meal schedule wasn't even important, but then I had learnt that I can tolerate a lot more "hunger" than I believed possible, so IF did indeed make me feel better overall. I haven't done keto, though.10

There's a load of calories in bulletproof coffee, just because you are drinking calories rather than eating them is irrelevant so no - drinking BPC isn't fasting.
No calorie, or virtually no calorie, drinks only outside your eating window.
My results from 16:8 style of fasting were negative - I simply disliked having a rigid set of artificial rules, for me the more restrictions the harder my compliance becomes. Becoming a frustrated clock watcher made me less happy for the same calorie intake. I'm a natural breakfast skipper but just prefer to do that by choice rather than feel compelled to.
Weight balance of course comes down to quantity not timing so in that regard it was neutral.
(Can't help with Keto, that would be a huge and counter-productive restriction for me.)

Hey OP. I did IF for a little while and have started KETO as well. I've been doing it a very short time, but the two programs do seem to compliment each other - easier to do IF when your blood sugar levels aren't bouncing all over the place. I find personally that KETO WOE is more satiating so the fasting window is easier to stick to.
Something I hear a lot in IF is that a beverage under 50 cal allow you to stay in a fasted state. I dont know the science of that, or if there is any, but many experienced IFers will tell you they have a coffee in the am. From a weight loss perspective it won't make a difference of course - those 50 cal go towards your daily total like anything else. I would say experiment a bit. Some find even those small amount of calories gets their system going and triggers hunger earlier, making IF more difficult. Others find it makes no difference.1 -

I hated fasting. I am a morning person and tend to make much better choices when I start off with a breakfast.
And yes, if you consume any calories, you are breaking the fast because your body has to metabolize those calories.5 -
There are some excellent youtube resourses that address this issue. I eat keto but became stalled after going off a few times. Stalling at 155 ish was frustrating since my goal is 125. My neice is having terrific success with keto and fasting ( down 45 pounds in 3 months) and is a veracious reader. She turned me on to some books. I read about the many fasts available and am now incorporating IF into my weekly life. I'm down 10 pounds now so 20 to go. I feel wonderful and motivated..energized and all the things they say will happen. I think fasting must be easier if you are on keto since the sugar spikes just aren't there any more. I begin every day with a glass of water with ACV and lemon while my coffee brews. I do have keto coffee every morning. 1 tsp coconut oil, 1tbsp cream, stevia and cinnamon. Use a frother.. its heavenly. I do this even on fast days so technically not a fast but I am not hungry all day and Im active and happy and feel great. Also... perimenopausal. I eat every 24 or 42 hours but I start each day with coffee. I feel Im on the best trajectory for my goal but am currently on a quest to get more greens ( potassium and vital vitamins) and turmeric in my diet so things inside are optimal. I dont know if the keto coffee makes me not be in a fast or not. I dont care. I think my brain likes the oil. Good Luck.16

You definitely are not fasting if you are consuming calories.9 -
I personally have my coffee with Stevia and a bit of Coconut Milk Creamer. My whole cup of coffee is maybe 30 calories. According to the purists I'm breaking my fast, but I really don't care. I'm not hungry in the morning regardless, and I'm losing weight just fine.2

I am on KETO and have coffee EVERY morning...black w no cream. I have been on it for 6 weeks and have lost 16 lbs. I have never felt better, once you figure out how to get into Ketosis you are good and will drop weight.12

I've been on Keto for 1 week and have lost 5 pounds. Which is amazing for me. Breakfast 8am I have two 8oz water in the morning with lemon. Then Coffee with 1 tbsp of MCT oil, 1 tbsp heavy cream, 2 tbsp of half and half. Lunch around 1pm or 2pm I have a 4 cup salad (arugula, kale, watercress, cucumber, carrot, celery) olive oil, apple cider vinegar, garlic, mustard for dressing. Top with avocado, pumpkin seed and chia seeds. Dinner is around 7pm protein and 2 cups of vegetables. In between meals and after dinner I'm drinking water. I feel great, lots of energy, sleeping well, thinking clearly.

I’m not calling you names, but I’m interested in IF and metabolism studies you can cite. Please post em if you’ve got em.6 -
I've been doing keto since July 1st this year. I started 16/8 IF Mon-Thurs last week and this week just to shake things up. In the morning I have two large cups of Oolong tea with 2 Stevia In the Raw packets, lunch at 1ish. Around 12-15 cups of water thoughout entire day. Still waiting for results on the IF.
Last I checked (on a "no scale" challenge right now) I had lost around 6 lbs by mid August. Feeling stuck and frustrated. Not gaining tho, so there's that. My biggest downfall is I don't log, I gauge and guess my macros, too lazy to log. Pretty lame I suppose. I don't touch any foods not Keto approved. I very much enjoy this WOE, even cooking for the family, I cook my way and they eat it if they choose to, so it's easy to do.0 -

Sounds like you already have the answer - if you are not losing, you aren't in a calorie deficit. Logging isn't a requirement, but it's the best way to ensure that you are indeed in a calorie deficit. Eating Keto, and practicing IF, is not a guarantee - if the deficit isn't there, you won't lose.7 -

Most of the weight is the sheer weight of food in your system.
I can see in my crystal bowl that you won't feel great on this scheme very long. And then you'll feel like sh|t, suddenly, not knowing what hit you. Be careful if your go-to comfort for when you feel like sh|t, is food.
IF is just a set of several arbitrary "feeding windows". While eating regular meals is generally a god idea, and the basic premise buried behind all the woo, you're not following any of the IF "protocols".1
