What do you do when life goes badly or someone is angry with you and theres no one in your life to comfort you without judgement or cheer you up? Where do you go?
Ive made a habit of turning to food but that just makes the problem worse in the long term.

Wow do I get what you are saying. I am nearly 50 and food has always been my comfort and my friend. I am not going to say that I have this mastered but right now I take it one day at a time. I am focusing on eating well, getting in physical activity and adding like minded folks to my MFP friend list so that we can support each other. I have not turned to food for comfort in 3 weeks. So far so good.
Find a healthy alternative to the food when you need comfort and build up your friend list here. You are not alone. Send me a friend request if you like.

I take a yoga class or get a pedicure.1

I hear you! It's taken a lot of work, but I'm working on not turning to food in times of stress. Sometimes I do great at it, sometimes not so much. But MFP is great, there's lots of support here!2

MFP is a great source. I would suggest building up your friends list. It's ok to vent and get out your frustration. Can you take a walk or job with some music to help you destress?5

A brisk walk or a run. Any exercise. When you exercise, your brain releases endorphins, adrenaline, serotonin and dopamine. These chemicals all work together to make you feel good. In addition, after exercising you may feel a sense of accomplishment and your muscles will relax deeper because of the workout, easing tension, strain and anxiety.6

Self love, being my own best friend. Reminding myself that I’m only sabotaging myself when I fall off the bandwagon. So If I feel bad vibes, I do some cardio, take a hot shower, light my candles and Netflix and chill by my lonesome.

During my weight loss journey, I realized that at times I'd stuff some kind of food in my mouth when I faced a conflict with someone, or if my feelings were hurt.
nn How self destructive is that? Now I recognize that when it happens..and I focus on sticking with my self improvement goals. I will not let someone's bad treatment of me, cause me to treat myself badly. It is empowering to tell yourself that no one is going to have that power.6 -
I know what you mean. I didn't realize how much of a factor food played in with dealing with my emotions until I started keeping a food journal. I've redirected going to food for comfort to the following:
Exercise definitely helps me deal. A nice brisk walk on a beautiful trail really helps to clear my head.
A warm bath with light music and candles helps.
Reading a good book can take my mind off things.
A mani/pedi/massage is great too.
Shopping for new clothes is a wonderful distraction.
Also I have such a fun and loving puppy who knows how to cheer me up on those off days.10 -
I chew gum like some people smoke cigarettes.3

That’s good that you acknowledge that you do that. I am really sorry that you feel you have no support . Believe me, I know what that is like. And I also know what damage food can do when we let it be our best friend, our pain fixer, and support system. I have done this since I was a young girl. And now in my fifties all it has got me is compromised health, and a very overweight body with a whole lot of side effects that go along with it. You are young and have your whole life ahead of you. That is great you have joined fitness pal, and that you want to not let food be your crutch. Unfortunately there will always be critical or unhelpful or mean people around. Ignore them, I don’t know what they get out of being like that. There are lots of people who do care and you can talk to. Maybe doing fun things that make you happy when you feel bad. Like listening to music, going out in the fresh air, having a nice bubble bath 🛀🏼, pampering yourself, lighting a candle. Take care x0

If I'm upset or something, I'll go for walks. Sometimes really long ones. Sometimes with some running in there. But always heading outside. Best place for mulling stuff over, IMO. No music, audiobooks, podcasts.
I walk daily anyways, but sometimes this is extra.

This. All the way. And trying not to internalize every negative thing that comes my way, even if someone else is trying to dump it on me.0 -
