What to do with my extra calories...

I always work out at the end of the day, after my kids are in bed. I know a lot of people say eat your exercise calories, but sometimes after I'm finished exercising I come up with 100+ extra calories (I usually try to plan for the excess but am not always on target). Is it really worth it to eat my exercise calories at 9:00 at night? If so, what do you recommended to eat that late?

If you are really hunger eat them back. If you are not then don't.
  • I don't think 100 calories extra is a big deal. If you're hungry I would eat something like yogurt, nuts. Eating at night isn't a big deal (I have dinner late all the time) but you shouldn't eat heavy food. If you're not hungry don't worry about it.

I like to reward myself by eating back SOME of them. It motivates me to exercise more.

Yeah, I figure 100 calories is the amount of error factor anyway. The numbers are not exact in neither calorie counting nor HRM/exercise calories.

    My favorite snacks are:

    Dreyer's frozen fruit bars
    Dried Mangos
    Sorbet

... an apple is good too

I rarely eat back all of my exercise calories. If the mood strikes you, have a glass of milk before bed (calcium...very important stuff!). Otherwise, it's really no big deal.
  • I eat them back about 75% unless I'm not hungry. It's 10:30, and I'm still eating . . .

If I do my "normal" exercise, I log it in the morning to know what I have before the end of the day. That way I can eat my exercise calories back through the day

    Give yourself a treat.

    My favs:

Half a protein bar (I like the Zone brand, they taste like candy bars)
    a piece of dark chocolate
half an apple with peanut butter
a cheese stick and some almonds

Plus at least a glass of water to accompany it.

I try to eat something with protein after a workout if I have the calories to do it.

When I work out late. I just eat them the next day...
I don't think they know the difference between before midnight or after midnight.

I'm rarely ever hungry right after a work out.

If my daily total says I'm under by 350 calories I, sometime as a reminder to myself go to the next days diary and under snacks add a QUICK CALORIES of -350 (negative three fifty)... Yes it lets you add negative numbers. So I don't feel like I've gone over and get all stressy about it.

I usually exercise in the evening or in the wee hours of the day. I don't hesitate to eat my exercise calories & include them in the same day, split them with the next day, or put them all into "early morning snack", wherever they fit. I also plan out my meals at that time.
    I hope this helps!
