:flowerforyou: Welcome:flowerforyou:
Load up on fruits and veggies, they are the best low-cal foods.
Drink lots and lots of water, and avoid calorie-high beverages such as pop and juice, and even milk, except as treats.
Cut out as much fat from your diet as possible. Eat your toast without butter; don't put extra fat on any of your foods. Use salad dressings sparingly, and choose the ones with high flavor and low fat.
If you ask the kitchen staff to help you make wise choices, I'm sure they would be willing to help
Hope that helps, and best wishes:flowerforyou:0 -
Cooking for me is an option, but not too good of one for me, the kitchen is too good in my dorm and with always being on the run its hard to get meals goin but any advice on cooking is helpful... also, im the type of person who has gone through diet after diet and phase after phase, in general im good with my choices and ive been taught alot however, carrots and whatevr vegtables or fruits i can get will make it back to my dorm room with me... one of my biggest problems is soda, no regular, diet, everybody tells me to stop and how i can lose more by stopping but i cant... im n addict0

I hated the dorm life!!! It can be so hard to do anything healthy when you're surrounded by pizza-party study sessions and whatever junk is quick at the cafeteria... But one thing that helps is if you have friends that are willing to go healthy with you. Is there anyone that you hang out with during meals? You could start cooking with each other during dinner time, start making it a couple of times a week together? It would even help out with costs, too... Pooling your resources could help make it more affordable.:bigsmile:0

Hey Jeremy,
College poses a special threat to those of us trying to adhere to some kind of nutrition plan and exercise regimen. What are your specific goals? Muscle up? Lose weight? Drop body fat? Overall fitness? If you have your goals written down in a place where you regularly see them (taped to your desk or computer monitor) you'll be reminded of them more often. Also, dorm life is a struggle but it CAN be done. Salads are always a good choice, but instead of taking things like bread or white carbohydrates to snack on later, see if the dorm kitchen offers hard boiled eggs, fresh fruit, or even low-fat yogurt (just watch the sugar content!). Regularly monitor your calories on myfitnesspal, and you'll begin to see trends and find out what works and what doesn't. Overall, the temptation is there, but if your goals are front and center, and you make yourself accountable by letting others know them, you'll be more likely to stick to them. As far as exercise, I'm sure there is a fitness center on campus. Find out if there are any group exercises classes that you can attend. They're usually pretty cheap and surrounding yourself with other people with similar goals will keep you motivated and on track. Also, when worst comes to worst, look for lean proteins, vegetables, fresh fruits, and stay away from processed food. Most of all, be sure to know you're strong for finding creative ways to overcome these obstacles. If you do have a slip-up, don't beat yourself up over it. Tomorrow is another day.

Hey, I'm also at uni and trying to lose weight. I'm trying to plan a day ahead, which I've found really helps. Plus I'm a diet Coke addict (does "still up at 3:15am" tell you anything?)- trying to cut down though. Does your uni have any sports societies? (Sadly ours are mainly teams- not much for the beginner, but then, we're a small uni.) Or a gym? That's a great bonus- student gyms are very cheap, and you can get great rates at other gyms as well, if you ask. Beware of alcohol! Very calorific and when you're drunk, who remembers the diet? I know many friends who's diets have been felled by booze! I'm not quite teetotal, but it's close. And I must say, I have just as much fun as friends who drink- it is possible to be a student and not a raving drunkard :P Best of luck0

hey! i actually go to UNH too. and i share your same issue. the dining hall is NOT helpful at all. i swear that the only food groups they have here are bread and cheese. i try to go to the gym whenever i can because it's just impossible to eat perfectly all the time. when i do eat at the dining hall i try to stick with sandwiches (on wheat bread or in a wheat wrap, with little or no cheese), salads, and lots of fruit. I also try to sneak out as many pieces of fruit as i can (wear your jacket into the dining hall! haha) so that i can snack on them later instead of something that's worse for me.
and i totally understand your soda addiction. i am addicted to diet pepsi and people tell me to stop drinking it, but i just can't give it up. so instead i've tried to cut back on the amount i drink and replace that with water. it helps!
good luck!0
