Sugar and Fiber

I have been doing fairly well with my weight loss, but I noticed in another post that someone commented on watching your sugar intake because it can lead to belly fat. Well, that's what I need to get rid of, so I changed my carbohydrates to sugar on my dietary settings & I notice that I go over in sugar everyday-ooops! I usually eat dried fruits & nuts for fiber & potassium. Now, I am wondering how am I supposed to reach my fiber goal (which helps me loose weight) without going over my sugar? Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thank you! (my food diary is public)

I like to add ground flax seeds to my yogurt, smoothies, etc. for extra fiber, or toss some alfalfa sprouts in my salads or sandwiches0

You can get loads of fibre from veggies and not fall into the carbohydrate trap at all.0

Ditto the above... I'm a big fan of flax and chia seeds... I add them to a 6oz container of Fage 0% greek yogurt every day... my favorite snack!0

Naturally occurring sugar in fresh fruit is not what you need to be as strict about. It is added sugar. I average 40 grams of fiber each day and eat vegan. Fruits and vegetables are full of fiber, as is whole grain bread.0

mfp sets the sugars very low. i also wouldn't drop carbs for sugar in your categories because they basically go hand in hand. you will get some very different answers to your questions. many on here say fruit sugars are fine ignore them and others won't. in the end i think it really depends on your situation. if you are really just trying to lose a little belly fat my guess would be that exercise is really your best approach. as for fiber you can take supplements or as i just pointed out on my profile atkins has a really tasty new fiber bar the daybreak oatmeal cinnamon square. yum!0

This comment lsaid it perfectly. You can still eat fruit just load up on the veggies.

Depends on your goal. If you are overweight and you don't want to gain muscle (like a body builder) and just lose the fat, I would cut out all types of sugar (even from fruit) until you reach your weight goal. That means instead of fruit everyday, let it be a reward and have it maybe once or twice a week. It's difficult, I just had 4 pieces of starburst last night but I think i earned it. Good luck.
Let me clarify before tons of people jump on me. Veggies have salt and sugar and those are fine. I am talking about foods that have a lot of sugars.
When asked why the Chinese could eat so much starchy foods and veggies and not gain weight, the reply by noted journalist, Gary Taubes said that the Chinese barely consume sugary foods so it wasn't even reported in Campbell's The China Study. So it isn't the good carbs as the sugar.0 -

I will suggest putting carbs back on your chart carbs turn into sugar if they aren't burned off afterall. So they should be watched as well.0

Thanks for this link! Good information :flowerforyou: I recently switched from dried cranberries to cherries, because it finally dawned on me that they generally add a TON of sugar to the cranberries.0 -
