Does anybody have any advice for someone who is new to yoga? I'm starting a beginners class in September and would like to be ahead of the game on anything that is taboo, how to prepare, what to expect, etc...

I'm not a pro by any means, but I love yoga. Here are a few pointers...
Wear comfortable clothing that won't "rise up" when you do some of the inverted moves.
Wear easy on and off shoes. Get your own mat, one that you can clean and know it's clean. Bring a towel.
Maybe google some basic yoga positions so that you have a little heads up on what they will be showing you.

    Thanks! :)
  • Hi there, I am a yoga teacher and the best thing I can tell you is to be gentle with yourself and respect your limits....we all have a tendency to expect we can do much more than we are capable of and of being far too harsh and critical of ourselves. Yoga is not a competitive sport, do not expect to get into all the positions....your teacher certainly will not expect you to get into them on your first attempt, take things gently, always listen to what your body is telling you...never push into pain. Also be aware that you may be capable of a posture one day...or a certain time of day, but not another...this is natural and you should always approach every posture from a point of awareness of how you feel NOW, not 45 minutes ago, 3 days ago or how you want to feel next week!

You do not say what type or style of yoga you are starting, I teach Hatha yoga and there is a link here to my blog post about what to expect at a class:

The other bit of advice is to listen to your breathing, if it is becoming ragged or unsteady you are pushing too hard, ease off of a posture or rest when you need to until the breath becomes steady again.

    Most of all....enjoy yourself!
    Namaste
