Pedometer and how many calories burnt

I want to add a few calories to MFP for steps taken as I walked 17k yesterday. I don't have one that syncs with MFP. Does anyone have the calculations they use by chance? I found a chart for my weight and steps taken and was going to divide in half so I don't over eat as it seems like way too much. I've tried various calculators and they are all over the place. I wish we could just add in steps taken and it would auto calculate. I know about the fitness and MPH and all that. I did a variety of exercise and tons of walking yesterday for fun.

    Well the calculation is time and distance, so there's that.

    Alternately you could buy a $30 pedometer that has approximate calories; I have an old-school Omron one I use when I'm doing some new activity that I don't know the distance. After setup (which you do one time by walking a distance and measuring it X steps and entering weight) it will calculate calories and distance and steps. I like it, I don't use the numbers that much and a Fitbit or similar device doesn't appeal to me. I have enough data collected over many years to just guesstimate on my exercise these days and just using a flat number works fine for me now.

    I saw the Amazon price awhile ago (shocked). I got my Omron (great device) for $20ish years ago.

    I'm guessing that specific model must not be being manufactured anymore. If you just search for "pedometer" on Amazon, you'll find a number of similar old-school pedometers for under $25, including other Omron models.

    I like ones that clip, which generally come with a lanyard if that's your preference. There are also pocket versions (but the clip ones that I've had fit in most of my pockets). It looks like all the bracelet ones have Internet-connection capability, but you wouldn't have to enable them if you didn't want to.

    Is this the equation you are looking for?
    I don't use any device, I just use this and it works fine for me.

    Walking calorie equation.
    (Weight x .3) x distance in miles.
    (W in lbs x .3)x (distance in km x .621)

    Running use weight x .6 or .63


    .621 converts km to mile.

    17k steps, if they were part of your daily living and considered in your activity level, would have your activity level pegged a little bit above MFP's very active.

    Just look up the calories that MFP would give you for being very active and eat to that.

    (Hint: the value would be 1.8x BMR.
    MFP uses the Mifflin St Jeor BMR formula your day was probably closer to 1.9. this assumes you're not an outlier, yada yada. Compare expected results to actual trending weight after 4 to 6 weeks to adjust...)

    Yeah this is getting into the finer points of Myfitnesspal.

    If you regularly walk 17,000 steps (like it's part of your job) use it as part of your Activity Level and set it at Very Active.

    If this was a purposeful walk that you did for exercise you would calculate like middlehaitch said, or use some other tracking device (like exercise calories here or a pedometer.)

    I use "Lightly Active" as my daily activity level because I'm retired and "Sedentary" is too low for me. Then I add in 300 extra calories per hour for my purposeful MODERATE exercise. I figured this out by tracking over a period of months and looking at my weight results. It's an experiment we all have to run.

    Get good at food logging and keep weighing your body and then the exercise bit will be easier to guesstimate. I always ate all the additional calories but some people find that's too many. It's all about fine-tuning your food intake and balancing that against your exercise and weight. It just takes time to dial it in.

    Thanks Everyone! I'm going to try to set to more active and see how that rolls for me. I just got a watch and wasn't really sure how many steps I've been taking in a day. Today no exercise and 7600 steps so far. I've been exercising most days well over 10k so I guess we will see how I even out.
